1. On the backside of the piece of vinyl, use Kilz primer or Gesso to seal the surface
2. Measure and tape off a border 4 ½ ” in from the edge around all sides of the floormat Paint this border Rhythm ‘N Blue plus Purple Dusk (1:1) using a sponge brush or small roller Apply as many coats as necessary to achieve complete coverage Allow to dry, completely
3. Measure and tape off a border 3 ½ “ in from the edge of the floormat over the previously-painted border  One-inch painter’s tape should cover this border completely
4. Measure in ½” from the edge and place tape over this area The tape will cover this area completely You should now have a three-inch strip of purple around the floormat
5. Bring the mat to Chapter with the tape on

Vines and Berries Floormat

Brush crackle medium onto the 3” purple strip. While this dries base in the center rectangle with light Ivory plus a touch of Rhythm ‘N Blue (a light blue-violet). Save leftover mix for future use.
When the crackle is ready, fill a damp round sponge with slightly thinned Light Ivory and sponge over the crackle medium.  OR if desired, brush on Light Ivory with a large brush. Remember not to overstroke.
Mix Rhythm N’ Blue with the paint left over from step 1 to a color about two shades
darker. Add water to the mix to thin, then load a large flat brush and blot on a paper towel to remove excess. Hold your brush vertically and Lightly drybrush the surface. It should look streaky.
Remove all tape. Touch up any areas. Load a liner with thinned Metallic Gold and line the edges of each border. Also drybrush some gold over the purple borders for a softer look.
Branches and vines. Using a larger round (#7) load the brush with slightly thinned Burnt Umber, then drag one side of the brush next to a puddle of Light Ivory. This will give you a highlight on one side of the branch.
Leaves. Use large and small filberts. Have fun creating the leaves. Doubleload and tripleload colors if desired – even use Rhythm ’N Blue with some greens. When double-loading a brush, always load the lightest color first. Don’t worry if your leaves are a little jaggedy, this will actually work to your advantage later. We will return to the leaves when they dry.
Once you have painted about one-third of the leaves, dot on Fruit Punch berries. Paint the berries so that some of the leaves will overlap the berries. Using cotton swab, dot the berries. Make a medium to light value of White plus Fruit Punch and dot over the berries, slightly off center (some of the Fruit Punch should show around the edges of the berry). Using a flat or angle brush place a shading float with Rhythm ‘N Blue at the bottom of each berry. Place a highlighting float at the top of each berry with Light Ivory plus a touch of Fruit Punch. Place a tiny comma stroke of white for the final highlight using the stylus.
Finish adding the leaves, overlapping some of the berries. Use a liner to connect the berries in clusters to the branches. Connect leaves to branches with stems.
Leaves. Using a fine liner and Black Green outline the edges of the leaves, giving them some definition. It helps when you are looking down on a floormat to give it some definition.
Apply one coat of varnish At this point if you want to tone down color, antique the floormat. Use DecoArt Faux Glazing Medium. Mix equal parts Faux Glazing Medium and water, in a puddle about the size of a nickel. Add a few drops of Burnt Umber, testing on a corner of the mat until you reach your desired hue. Lightly drybrush this mix over the mat, a little at a time, until you reach your desired effect.
Apply approximately seven coats of varnish to the floormat. Allow adequate drying time between coats. Apply liquid acrylic floor polish to finish and protect your mat.
If desired, thinly spread latex silicone caulking on the back of the floormat to help prevent slipping.

March 15 Chapter Minutes:
Our Chapter President Jeanne Swanson called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. with seventeen members in attendance. We are having a very short meeting today since our teacher Karen Hubbard has a return trip to Eugene after Chapter.
Jeanne announced that there was no Board Meeting held yesterday, everything seems to be pretty much on track and running smoothly.
Jeanne asked for short one minute reports from the members and chairpersons.
Newsletter Editor Stormy Speaker reported she has printed tickets for the Roni LaBree Special drawing if anyone is interested in buying or selling any of them. She said that Donna has already received $10.00 from a lady in Missouri. The tickets are on our HOTUA website and also are on Between the Vines website. You may print them from either location. Web page is up and looks really good. Thank you Jamie, you did a great job.
Stormy volunteers for Project Literacy The Adult Learning Place, a non profit organization, offering adults in Douglas County a variety of help in math, reading, GED, English as a second language and a wide range of computer classes. They are having a fund raiser in May and wanted to know if anyone would be interested in donating painted pieces as door prizes for their fund raiser. If you are interested in donating, please see Stormy.
Stormy said she has newsletters on the table from other chapters if anyone is interested in looking at them. Jeanne said she forgot to ask if anyone wanted to make a motion to accept the minutes from last month as printed in the newsletter. Joni Brooks made a motion to accept the minutes as printed and Helen Fortner made a second. Motion was carried.
Secretary Imogene Rains had no report.
Treasurer Helen Fortner reported that we had $4,496.40 in our combined accounts. She also said the ornaments that had been brought in were WAY COOL.
Ways and Means Chairperson Barbara Steingrobe reported that she had received payment for the recycle phones and ink cartridges totaling $56.40. Some of the phones were not accepted, she has a list if anyone is interested. She will continue collecting cell phones and ink cartridges so please continue to recycle these items. Barbara will be taking Athena Brush orders today at lunchtime, for those that are interested in ordering she has a catalog. She also brought in a copy of the newsletter if anyone wants to look at it.
Memory Box Chairperson Phyllis Lynch reported there were boxes on the back table if anyone needed any to paint. She said that Jeanne had sent five (5) boxes to Oregon Health Center in Wilsonville. Jeanne then indicated that Joni had brought in single boxes, so if you didn’t want to take the boxes in groups of three, please feel free to take the singles. Jeanne also said that when she went to send the last boxes, she didn’t have a shipping box so she went to the Myrtle Creek Goin’ Postal. When she told the gentleman there what she was shipping and why, he told her anytime that she was sending memory boxes, let him know, he would package them free, since it was such a wonderful cause. Karen added that if you are sealing or base coating memory boxes there was a new tinted Krylon that works very well for spray painting. Linda indicated it was Kilz.
Chapter Liaison Donna White reported that she has received several replies to her emails about the Roni LaBree fundraiser. They will pass the information on to their chapter members. Many knew Roni and were very pleased with what we were doing. Stormy kind of stepped in as Donna is having difficulty with her throat, and mentioned that she and Donna had sent emails to every Chapter President in Calif., Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada and Arizona. Donna then mentioned she is having a problem with some point sheets. Some members are not filling in points or are putting them in the wrong places. She has highlighted questionable items, so please check with Donna if you have a highlighted area on your sheet.
Jeanne mentioned that Mary Myers and Belinda Legg were responsible for the Themed Meeting decorating. It was very festive with an egg tree with cute little bunnies and floral arrangements on the tables. We also received a small gift for each of the attending members.
Sunshine Lady Treia Stitzer reported she had sent out many birthday cards this month. Jeanne asked if she was receiving one, since it was between chapter meetings. Treia gave her the standard, “it’s in the mail”.
2nd Vice President Jean McNeese was present but Jeanne reported that Jean was having computer problems and that a new membership list would be sent out as we had some incorrect email addresses. One that came back was for Jamie Mills-Price so Jeanne indicated that the email addresses for members was not for public usage. Several members indicated that even though they were not Big Brushes, they didn’t want their email address for public usage either.
Do not share chapter email addresses.
1st Vice President Mary Myers said she had nothing to report, but did want to thank Karen Hubbard for teaching a Chapter project.
Jeanne asked if everyone wanted to take a five minute break before we started painting. Donna asked if we were to price our own ornaments for our fund raiser. The answer was yes, since some of them involve much more painting detail than others. Don’t forget there are ornament blanks for best sellers and also other blanks on the back table for members to buy or take. Barbara gets to take the painted ornaments from the back table home with her.
Meeting was adjourned at 10:15 a.m. so we could get started painting.
Remember that it has always been the policy of the Chapter that members can bring concerns or questions to any Board member. If you have a question or concern, please bring it to the attention of any Board member. If we don’t have an answer, we will get you one.
Respectfully submitted
Imogene Rains, Secretary

Redwood Tole Folk
By Karen Wagner, Redwood Tole Folk
Redwood Tole Folk, Eureka, CA
Community Service Project - July 2007
In July 2007 the Redwood Tole Folk tackled the 63-foot long, six-foot tall fence at the New Life Christian School in Fortuna, Calif. It seemed like a long, long fence but once we got started we found ways to fill it up, thanks to the creative women in the chapter. The committee planned out the basic fence and created some patterns. Then the painters took off from there. With a great crew, we were able to finish the painting in four days. The paints for the project were donated by the family of a respected local painter who had passed away recently. This project was part of a larger renovation project at the school. It was impossible to take a picture of the whole fence because it is so long and because there is playground equipment in front of it. Besides the larger details, there are many hidden pairs of animals, bugs, and so on throughout the mural. The children should have a wonderful time discovering everything hidden in the scenes
