Volume 6, Issue 4 ~ April 2009

If you missed the March meeting, you missed a wonderful time. We had a great time painting sea shells. Phyllis Lynch did a great job as our teacher. Thank you so much Phyllis.
Let's continue with the same theme in April when we will have the honor of being taught by Niki McBride. I am really excited. I have been trying to get a class from Niki for a long time. If any of you have the chance to drive into Winston, you can see some of Niki's work on the side of the A.M. Market and Deli. Her painting have sold for thousands of dollars, in galleries in Hawaii, Chicago and San Francisco. I hope that you will all take advantage of this opportunity. We are very lucky to have her. She does suggest that you bring an easel if you can.
We will try to keep our business meeting short and sweet, so please, look at the minutes from last month. Take note that we voted to only have the two charities this year, ie – the memory box program and the church food pantry. This was due to the budget constraints. We also voted to do away with the theme meetings for the remainder of this year. This was due to the work load placed on the theme meeting chair, who was already holding another board position. Of course we will still be having our annual Christmas party which falls under theme meetings. We will have a discussion on the points system. There have been suggestions to do away with it completely. There have also been suggestions to revamp or simplify it. Please consider what you would like to see happen so that this discussion can go quickly. We all know that we are really hear to paint, after all. I for one would like to get the business done as quickly as possible. I'm sure you all feel the same way.
Well, on to the painting. I hope to see you all at chapter.

Stormy Speaker Treasurer, Heart of the Umpqua Artists |
|
March 21, 2009
10:05a.m. Meeting came to order.
President – Barbara Steingrobe
Joni made a motion to accept the minutes as they were printed in the news letter. Phyllis 2nd the motion. There was no meeting in February do to our seminar with Chezza. That was a lot of fun. Barbara gave Mary the floor.
First V.P. - Mary Meyers
Mary brought up the changes for the year, with Jamie and Tammy not being able to teach. Mary asked if we would like to have a one or two day seminar. We asked Donna White if she would like to teach it. She left it up to the chapter, so we voted for Donna to teach a one day seminar. She will either paint a horse or an owl. Our year is complete.
Treasurer – Stormy Speaker
Membership cards are attatched to yourpoints papers, please check to make sure it is correct, and see if you got yours. She also finished the one page membership and e-mail info, and handed them out. Make sure everything is correct. She passed out our Treasurer's report. See attached.
President- Barbara Steingrobe
Barbara asked the chapter to vote on our charity for 2009. Joni asked, “ Why we needed to have a charity since money is tight? Why not give up this charity since we do memory boxes and the food bank? Why not leave it like that for now?” The chapter voted to only have the two charities this year, instead of three, so we will have the memory box program and the food bank. Also we voted on doing away with the themed meeting, do to the expense. So we will only do the Christmas party, but Mary did request some help this year.
Phyllis commented that the seminat amount in the proposed budget was to to small and should accually be double. This will need to be adjusted.
Barbara made a fundraising goal chart to see what we did last year and were we are each month this year. Our treasure box is filling up nicely, She has sold $26 worth of tickets so far. Barbara talked about the craft sale and those who would like to come and bring stuff. It's a way for you to make money and the chapter too. We need to make a sandwich board to direct people to the sale. We talked about Bunko, but will talk more about this when we have more members at chapter.
Phyllis took a moment to tell everyone about our 3 members who need our thoughts and prayers.
Jeanne Swanson- had knee surgery. ( ouch )
Imy Rains- Is in rehab, learning to walk again.
Helen Fortner- Our thoughts and prayers to give her strength during this horrible time.
Meeting ended at 11:05a.m.
Barbara introduced our teacher Pyllis Lynch.
P.S. This was an excellent chapter meeting and we got a lot accomplished, WAY TO GO BARB.
Ronnie Gobel, Secretary, Heart of the Umpqua Artists

Seascape Original design by Niki McBride
Pre-Class Instruction: We will be doing a seascape, so those of you that have an easel may want to bring it, this kind of painting is much easier standing working on a vertical surface.
Palette: Tube Acrylics White, Cobalt Blue, Payne’s Grey, Thalo Blue, Thalo Green, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, Cadmium Yellow Medium and Thalo Yellow Green (or a light yellow green).
Brushes & Special Supplies: 1” or 2” soft blending brush, (I use a 2” Bob Ross blender), 3/4 angle or flat, 1/4” angle, 1” natural bristle brush, a liner brush (your choice), 1/4 filbert (or cat’s tongue) and an inexpensive natural bristle brush (bought at the hardware store) for wetting your canvas. A water container, spray bottle for water (light mist), palette knife for mixing, and a small palette knife for making sharp edges. Also a Stay-Wet paper palette, with a sponge under it for keeping your paint wet and an old towel. Paper towels. I will bring a few extra brushes for those that don’t have them.
Surface Size, Type and Prep: A stretch canvas, your choice: slower painter use an 8x10; medium painter, use an 11x14, a faster painter 16x20.I will be working on a 16x20 for easy viewing. There is no prep needed if you are using a pre-primed canvas, however the finer surface the canvas is the better.

LEMON-CORNMEAL Cake Donna White (Taken from Women’s Day magazine, March 3, 2009 issue)
|
|
Baking spray (cooking spray with flour) 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour ½ cup yellow cornmeal 2 tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. each baking soda and salt 2 sticks (1 cup) unsalted butter, softened 1 3/4 cups sugar 1 Tbsp. grated lemon zest ¼ cup lemon juice 4 large eggs 1 cup buttermilk or plain yogurt, stirred to loosen
|
SUGAR GLAZE 1 cup sugar 1/3 cup lemon juice
|
|
1. Heat oven to 325 degrees. You’ll need a 10 cup decorative tube pan or a 12 cup Bundt pan coated with baking spray. In medium bowl, whisk together flour, cornmeal, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
2. In large bowl beat butter, sugar, lemon zest and juice with mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time until blended. With mixer on low, alternately beat in flour mixture and buttermilk until batter is smooth. Scrape into prepared pan; level top with spatula.
3. Bake 55-65 minutes until wooden pick inserted in cake comes out clean. Cool cake in pan on wire rack 5 minutes.
4. Meanwhile, make the sugar glaze:
Whisk glaze ingredients in a small bowl just until combine (sugar will not be totally dissolved). Invert cake from pan onto rack; place rack over a baking sheet. Brush glaze all over hot cake until absorbed (sugar crystals will be evident). Cool completely. Transfer cake to a serving plate and cover. Let cake rest several hours, or overnight, before serving. Store cake covered at room temp. up to 4 days. Cut into thin slices to serve. Serves 20
TIP: Use lime zest and juice for a zesty alternative

Please remember, our chapter is very fortunate - we do not have to pay any fees to use the Tri-City Church of Christ facility. In 2009 let’s continue to show our appreciation and help support their church pantry. In the bag, please put a list of the items you bring and their est. cost, thank you!
March Report: 34 items for a cost of $44.99 (sorry, editor missed this) April Report: 14 items for a cost of $23.50
