President's Message
Think spring. I know the weather is typical Oregon spring. I’m not real fond of it, but the trees and grassy hills behind my house love it. I hope everyone loved the pen and ink candle shade taught by Phyllis Maurer. I had to leave early for a wedding but was very happy with what I completed.
I am very happy to be continuing on to Jamie’s very cute April project. The sun looks so happy. It looks like a project that was made for a beautiful spring day. I hope the rain takes a break that day.
It was nice to see a few members take my “president’s challenge” last month. My challenge for this month is to bring something that resembles Easter. It can be a painting, picture, or misc. item of your choice. Don’t be a stick in the mud. Take the challenge!
Happy Easter: your Heart of the Umpqua Artists President

The March 20, 2010 Chapter Meeting of the Heart of the Umpqua Artists was brought to order by President, Barbara Steingrobe, at 10:00 a.m. at Tri-City Church of Christ Fellowship Hall. Present at the meeting were: Barbara Steingrobe, Stormy Speaker, Donna White, Jodie Hall, Lyn Moan, Phyllis Lynch, Tonyia Mills, Dee Everhart, Helen Fortner, Kathryn Hardy, Joni Brooks, Carol Swanson, and Phyllis Maurer. Our guest was April King, Donna White’s daughter.
The Minutes of the January 16th meeting were corrected and approved, as follows; (Page 2, second paragraph) We would have a year to do the quilt and it would be raffled (delete) at the Business Women’s Craft Show. (insert) after the Las Vegas Show in Feb 2011.
Donna White, 1st Vice President, reported that our Calendar for 2010 has been filled. Jamie Mills-Price will be teaching in April, Sue Eakin in May, no teachers for the summer months of June-July-August, Karen Hubbard in September, Karen Hubbard in October, and Nikki McBride for the 2-Day Seminar in November. December will be our Christmas Party. Niki McBride is willing to do our Seminar in November. The cost would be $71 for a 2-Day Seminar and we pay for supplies. Niki would do either a landscape or seascape. Donna asked for a show of hands for those that would be interested in attending. There were 7 that said they would attend with 3 more …depending. Barbara suggested that the Chapter hold a fundraiser to help pay for some of the expenses of this seminar and added that the members could use up to 80 points ($40) to help with the seminar fees Several members volunteered to help with the Coffee Stop fundraiser. A show of hands indicated that we would have enough members attending (with using funds from the fundraiser and points).
Stormy Speaker, Treasurer reported that she had our 2010 Chapter Membership Cards. We currently have 21 paid memberships. Stormy passed out the new Roster sheets and made two corrections: Joni’s email address was corrected and a cell phone number was given for Barbara as she will be disconnecting her landline soon. The current balance in the Chapter accounts; -$4,114.43 in the Umpqua Bank Money Market Account -$1,430.95 in the Umpqua Bank Checking Account $5,545.38 Total of both accounts Stormy passed out the Budget for 2010 and asked everyone to look it over and we would vote on the budget after lunch. It was moved by Helen Fortner to accept the 2010 Budget as presented, seconded by Donna White. Motion passed. The year-end audit has been completed and sent to SDP. Stormy thanked Helen Fortner for her help in doing the audit.
Barbara Steingrobe, President, thanked Jodie for the photographs of the Karen Bouwer Seminar that she posted online at Snapfish. Several members could not access the site so the photos will be given to Jamie to post on our chapter website. Barbara asked everyone to check out the new SDP blog site too. An email was received by Barbara for the “Paint For Freedom” cards to be given to Vets in this area. Barbara gave all the details of the project and asked for a show of hands if they were interested in participating. It was determined that this information had reached us too late for us to participate since the cards were due in April. It was asked if communication by Text Message or Email was best. A show of hands indicated that email was the best communication for the majority of the members.
Helen Fortner reported on the Memory Box project. She received several boxes today and will be hunting down all the boxes still out there to be painted. She has to ship the boxes in multiples of 3 so she encouraged us to finish painting the boxes that we still have at home. Barbara asked when we would like to do the Coffee Stop fundraiser. Last year it was done around the last of August. It was suggested, and agreed by show of hands, that we do it over the Memorial Day weekend this year. Our regular chapter meeting day will have to be changed in June due to the church having to book a wedding on that day. Barb talked to a gallery owner in Bandon and he has offered to do a class on “Perspective”. After the class we could look around the shops and have lunch in one of the restaurants. Barb also offered as an alternative the VFW Hall for $30, or her home where she has a large screen TV and lots of decorative painting videos to choose from.
· After discussion, the members chose to rent the VFW Hall in June for our regular chapter meeting. · It was moved and seconded that the meeting be adjourned. Motion passed. Minutes of the Chapter Meeting were taken and typed by Jodie Hall, Secretary

April 2010 At last month’s meeting we decided to hold a coffee booth on Memorial Weekend. That would be May 29-31. This would be a great weekend because of the extra traffic on the road. We are also looking forward to playing some Bunco. There should be more information on that at our April meeting. It should be a lot of fun. It would be great to take a large bite out of the cost of the possible November Seminar with Nikki McBride.

Please remember, our chapter is very fortunate - we do not have to pay any fees to use the Tri-City Church of Christ facility. In 2009 let’s continue to show our appreciation and help support their church pantry. In the bag, please put a list of the items you bring and their est. cost, thank you!

Recipe submitted by Donna White Peanut Buttery Chocolate Cake! by Kimberly Keller ~ Printed in the American Profile
|
|
|
|
Cake: 1 cup brewed coffee, cooled to room temperature Cooking spray 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 2/3 cup vegetable oil 2 cups granulated sugar 2 eggs 1 cup of 2% reduced fat milk
|
Frosting: 1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese, softened ¼ cup creamy peanut butter 2 cups powdered sugar 2 tablespoons 2% reduced fat milk ½ teaspoon vanilla extract Miniature chocolate chips
|
|
Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Coat a 13 X 9-inch glass baking pan with cooking spray. 2. To prepare cake, sift together flour, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder and salt into a large bowl. 3. Combine oil and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Using a mixer, beat at medium speed until well combined. Add eggs; beat well. Add flour mixture alternately with milk, beginning and ending with flour mixture, beating well after each addition and scraping down the sides of the bowl. Stir in the coffee and vanilla (batter will be thin). 4. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake 35 to 40 minutes, until a wooden toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool completely on a wire rack. 5. To prepare frosting, combine cream cheese and peanut butter in a large mixing bowl. Using a mixer, beat at medium speed until smooth. Add powdered sugar, milk and vanilla; beat until smooth. (If frosting is too thin, add more powdered sugar; if it is too thick, add more milk.) Spread frosting over top of cooled cake and sprinkle with chocolate chips, if using. Store in the refrigerator. Serves 16. This recipe can be reduced in half and will fit into an 8X8 baking dish. If you are a real peanut butter lover add ½ cup of peanut butter to the frosting instead of ¼ cup!
Yum!
