Hello my dear painting partners. I hope that the heat has not melted anyone. I have weathered the weather fairly well; I cannot say the same for some of my plants however. Once again we had a low attended chapter meeting with Carole Oyler’s oil roughing piece. We certainly understand that there has been unforeseen circumstance this year. We do have some members out on summer vacations, but we also have had a number of illnesses and surgeries. Summers are typically lower in attendance, but this year has been hard hit. We decided to cancel our teacher for the month of August. Mary contacted Phyllis Maurer and explained that we didn’t want her to drive such a distance to teach only 3-4 students. We didn’t think this would be fair to her. She was disappointed but understood why we came to this decision. She may be able to teach next year. We will still be holding chapter in August. We will be watching a video teaching from Jerry Yarnell. He is a fabulous teacher. If you don’t know his work you will be pleased that you joined us. It will be a fun and low key meeting. We will have a great discussion on the material discussed on the video. Please come and join us.

HEART OF THE UMPQUA ARTISTS CHAPTER MEETING JULY 11, 2009 Meeting called to order at 10:05 AM.
PRESIDENT; Barbara Steingrobe made motion to except the May minutes as written in newsletter Phyllis excepted as they were written and Joni seconded it. Did the large trunk drawing and the winner was Mary Meyers (yea Mary) we earned $205.00. Barbara handed out the new point sheets and the chapter voted to except the new points system.
Due to the small attendance during the summer months we as a chapter voted on not having a teacher for June, July, August, last 2 months we only had 3 to 6 people show up and we don't even make enough on our raffles to pay a teacher, so we will still have class but no teacher, bring what ever you would like to paint or knit or sew or whatever, just come and socialize. So we will not do any bleeding hearts in August.
Laurie Larkey sent a Thank you note for having her teach in April and cant wait to do it again and is saving a spot for us next year.
TREASURE; Stormy Speaker reported how much we have in the 2 accounts a total of $5165.81. She also reported that there are members who have gotten new email addresses if you have please let her know. Donna, Phyllis, and Joni all have new addresses.
PRESIDENT; Barbara let chapter know about the craft sale at Ronnie's house on July 25th from 10 am to 4 pm. Chapter voted on 20% of sales will go to chapter as a fund raiser. Barbara is still trying to reserve the rest area north of Roseburg for August 21-22, anyone who would like to sit with Barbara she would love company.
Donna White will be our teacher in October and she brought in her painting and one was a Horse and the other was a flower, chapter voted on which to paint and hands down it was the HORSE. It is absolutely beautiful. Joni let everyone know that Siskiyou Chapter is having there 1st annual Bunko fund raiser, it will be on September 19th, Donations are $25.00 per person, it is from 11-3 if anyone would like to go maybe we can carpool. This is just a quick update on fundraising. Our large trunk was raffled off in July and the winner was Mary Meyers. There were some wonderful treasures filling the chest. I hope that we will see what she has painted on them as she goes. Congratulations Mary. We earned just over two hundred dollars on the raffle. Stormy will have the exact $ amount in her report. We also had our sale at Ronnie Gobel’s house, and even though the extreme heat kept the people away, we still earned $42.60 for the chapter. It could have been better if the heat had stayed away. We have applied for the coffee booth at the rest area. Hopefully we will know soon if we will be doing that. The dates are Aug 28-30. I think it will be a good fundraiser. Wish us luck or say a prayer, whatever is your preference. I hope to see you at chapter. Barb. Steingrobe; your fearless and faithful president.

Due to low attendance at the summer monthly meetings, we will not have a scheduled guest teacher for August. Members will be getting together to paint and/or to visit a bit, we’d like to see what each other is painting! So, do you have some unfinished paintings/projects lying around? Or would you like to spend the day painting Memory Boxes? Whatever you choose...we would love to see you!

Please remember, our chapter is very fortunate - we do not have to pay any fees to use the Tri-City Church of Christ facility. In 2009 let’s continue to show our appreciation and help support their church pantry. In the bag, please put a list of the items you bring and their est. cost, thank you!
The totals for the food pantry for this month are: 17 items and a total of $26.98.

From Nina Daniels: Hi, I would like to proudly shout out!!! One of my advanced art students, Jie Zhu was one of the congressional art competition winners. As winner, his art piece will hang in the nations capitol for one year. He and his mother were able to attend the annual reception in D.C. late June. OOhhh!! how I wish I could have also attended. so if you are in DC this next year stop by and sign up for a tour of the artwork. or you can go to www.conginst.org click on congressional art competition- then Oregon to look through the winning entries. I have checked out a few other states and Texas has a great still life. All from high school students. WOW! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hello Sister Chapters, Cindy Ferguson, 1st V.P. of The Coast to the Cascades here. I'm writing to invite you all to attend our Third Annual Painting Retreat in Turner, (Just south of Salem). Our members have all had there chance to sign up first. Now it is time to open it up to others. Back by popular demand, this years teacher will be Jill Paris Rody from Campbell River, Canada. We are very excited about the projects that we have planned to paint with her. You can't paint with Jill without doing at least one color learning project. So we will be paining a "Elegant Fruit/Berry color wheel. This project can be painted on the surface of your choice. Makes a nice clock, tray or coasters. Jill has been very passionate about painting water colors lately. Even though we weren't ready to start in with a new medium, Jill is going to teach us to do a beautiful beach scene with a water color look, using acrylics. If this year is anything like the pass two. We are all in for a good time. Pack light. Like your staying in a hotel and eating in a restraint. Just bring a couple chances of cloths, jammies, and of course your painting supplies. The cost for the whole weekend. (For Friday 4:00 until Sunday 5:00) is only $225.00. That pays for everything. Room, Board, Seminar and watercolor paper for the watercolor/acrylic project. Bring your own surface or surfaces for the color learning project. Right now we still have plenty of openings. If you'd like to see more about the Coast to the Cascades chapter and our October Retreat, see our website at: http://www.coasttothecascades.org/ (541) 688-3732

A letter from the SDP Board of Directors went out on April 16, (Keep Our Society Strong-KSS), sharing honest information about the Society’s current financial situation and asking our members to help out by pitching in any way that they can.
The response has been overwhelming and heartwarming! We would not expect anything less from our wonderful members. Out of the hundreds of emails we received, two were from Chapters who wished to challenge their sister Chapters to support SDP. Those challenges are reprinted below. We would be so grateful if you would take a moment to read the challenges, share them with your Chapter members, and consider accepting one of these challenges.
From Leah Luper, President of The Idaho Chapter of Heritage Artists The Idaho Chapter of Heritage Artists is donating $500 to the KSS effort and is challenging ALL the other Chapters of SDP to do the same! We had our monthly meeting today, discussed the email and voted 100% in favor of sending the donation. When we discussed all the things that National does for us, and how our lives have changed because of Decorative Painting, there was no other option than to support our National organization and issue this Challenge for other Chapters to do the same or more!!
We understand that Chapters come in many sizes and that a $500 donation is a lot of money! We are equally grateful for any gift you can give, and want to share the approach that another Chapter has taken. Here is the other challenge that we were asked to send you:
From Gloria Falk TDA, President of Gateway Decorative Artists of Greater St. Louis , Mo. Since the news came out that SDP could sure use some extra funds, we brought it up at our meeting last Sunday. The Chapter voted to send a donation to SDP. Someone spoke up and said, "What if every member here today would donate a $1? That would be easy on everyone and it would help SDP." We passed the hat and everyone chipped in. We'll do it again at our next meeting with a goal of raising a nice sum to send in from the chapter. We would like to challenge every chapter to do this! If everyone who attends chapter meetings donates just $1 it will make a difference. For without SDP, we wouldn't be where we are today. Will you send our CHALLENGE out to the other chapters?
Thank you, again, for your consideration. Together we will get through the tough times the way we always do: as a family! The Board of Directors and Staff of the Society of Decorative Painters
