President’s Message for February:
Hi Everyone,
Wow! What can I say but WOW! You all were so great and responsive to the new ideas for fund raising. Thank you so much. Phyllis was charming and informative as usual. Thank you Phyllis. I bet we have a few gold leaf projects appear in Show and Tell in the future. February is Barb and an adorable project, for the Sweetheart month.
I want you to PLEASE go to the Patricia Rawlinson website at www.patriciarawlinson.com and look at the work she does. Be ready to comment on whether or not you would like her as a seminar teacher. We have problems locating an available teacher for this year, as they are already booked for the most part. We can do a seminar with a local teacher possibly like Donna or Sue Eakin but we need to make a decision. Mary Jo Gross has a website also that you might take a look at. Be ready to have an informed and constructive discussion. Siskiyou Chapter has changed their schedule so Patricia Rawlinson will not be there until 2010.

Remember to bring your painted egg/eggs, so we can get them to Belinda, in plenty of time for Easter sales. Oh my gosh, if there were 20 ways to ruin my egg I tried but it’s ready now.

At meeting, we will have a few different styles of ornament blanks available, to begin our ornament painting. Thank you Donna. Don’t forget to bring your soda cans and check your pockets for spare change. As always, looking forward to the next meeting.
Smiles, Jeanne

Memory Boxes
Everyone has made the Memory Box Program quite successful for our chapter. We have only a few changes this year. We will be mailing five boxes a month, instead of four. Phyllis will be keeping the records and checking boxes in and out. Jeanne will be storing the boxes and mailing them. In January we mailed five boxes to Legacy Emanuel Hospital, Portland, OR. If you would like to paint on a Memory Box when Karen Hubbard comes, we will have several extras at February chapter. Thanks everyone.
The members of Heart of the Umpqua Artists wish to say a very special Thank You to Umpqua Bank for stepping up and sponsoring our Memory Box Project. Please visit their website and see why community matters and it is the “World’s Greatest Bank”! http://www.umpquabank.com

January 19 Chapter Minutes:
The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. by our president Jeanne Swanson. There were 18 members present at this Chapter meeting.

Jeanne asked for a motion to accept the November minutes as printed in the December newsletter. Joni Brooks made a motion to accept, Phyllis Lynch made the second. Motion was carried.

Newsletter Editor, Stormy had nothing to report.
Membership Chair, Jean McNeese, nothing to report.
Memory Box Program, Jeanne Swanson reported that five (5) boxes were sent to Legacy Emanuel Hospital. We currently have boxes at Treasures of the Heart that have been paid for from the HOTUA Memory Box fund. If you need boxes, please stop and pick them up from Belinda, please take a full set of three. We were committed to four boxes a month, but we have now committed to five a month. We have boxes painted and ready to send, so we should meet that commitment very easily with the number we have on hand plus the ones that come in every month. Keep up the good work ladies. Please continue to paint boxes for this very worthy cause.
Jeanne mentioned she was unaware that Phyllis was no longer knitting dishcloths for the Memory Box Program. She is having wrist problems and has been donating her time and yarns to this program for several years. Great job Phyllis. Jeanne is crocheting dishcloths and has been placing them at J & J Fabrics in Canyonville. She will place some at Treasures. (Jeanne did not say this, but if anyone knits and crochets and would like to volunteer their services, it would be very much appreciated as this is our only fundraiser for the Memory Box program).

First Vice President Mary Myers said she had most of the teachers lined up for Chapter 2008. Barbara Steingrobe will be teaching in February and Karen Hubbard will be teaching in March. March will be closed to members only.
She has most of the other slots filled but is still confirming with some of the teachers. She said she had been looking for Seminar teachers for our Seminar. Phyllis had printed some information about teachers in the Portland area. Patricia Rawlinson, Mary Jo Gross and Erika Frei. Information is on the back table, please look it over. There are also a couple of pictures for the Karen Hubbard class on the table, please decide which you would like to paint, a paper will be sent around later. Majority will rule on picture choice.

Mary has scheduled Lori Larky for 2009 to teach the reverse glass painting, she was booked for 2008. The seminar will be scheduled in September if we can decide on a teacher and they are available. Mary said she would like to keep costs down, so is looking at west coast painters at the moment. Mary said some of the painters she has contacted will not teach a Sunday seminar. Would anyone be interested in a Friday-Saturday seminar?? A show of hands indicated no one was interested in the Friday-Saturday seminar, so we will stick to the Saturday and Sunday schedule for Seminars. Back to teachers, Stormy indicated she was interested in the Artful Stencils out of Eugene for a class. Mary will pass around a sheet for suggestions for teachers. Please list any you are interested in.

Treasurer Helen Fortner. She said totals had not changed since the year end report, other than the released extra points from members. With the released points, we have a very good start on seed money to add to for a free seminar. She also said there had been some questions about raising money when we have close to five thousand dollars in our combined accounts. She has a rough breakdown that is being passed around the tables indicating where that money is being held and why. We need fundraisers because we can not use the account funds that have been allocated for other uses as suggested by SDP and HOTUA. When Helen finished with the breakdown of allocated funds, we had approximately six hundred dollars that could be spent. If any member has any other questions or concerns, please talk to any Board member. We will get you an answer.

Sunshine Lady Treia Stitzer said we had no January birthdays, but did have two cards she sent for December birthdays.

Ways and Means Chair Barbara Steingrobe announced we would be selling Ornaments for our major fundraiser. We could also sell tickets for wreaths if anyone is interested in donating a wreath for the fundraiser. Belinda has volunteered her shop and her commission if we want to sell ornaments for the fundraiser. She suggested we needed to paint about two hundred so we could sell when Jamie has her seminars this summer. That breaks down to about two ornaments a month for each member. That is not quite as intimidating as ten each. We may man a table at the shop with ornaments and bake sale items during seminar time as many participants also come to Treasures to shop and are always looking for goodies to take back to their rooms to snack on. Jamie said she would make an announcement at the seminars about our fundraiser. Belinda also suggested we sell eggs during Easter at the shop but we need to sign and date each egg. She has wooden egg blanks that chapter may purchase at .63 cents each if we are interested. Chapter was interested so Helen will run down at lunchtime to purchase the eggs. Belinda also volunteered to personalize the ornaments and eggs if any one requests that option during purchase. Chapter will purchase ornament blanks for the Fundraiser, but if you have some you want to donate, please feel free.

Barbara apologized for not getting the cell phone-ink cartridge recycles in the mail. She has them boxed up and ready to go, but has not gotten them to UPS. She said there is a bonus for her procrastinating, as the recyclers have raised the payment rate. She has been unable to lift the box as she hurt her back, she will see if Jim can help her. Linda Jones said she lives in Winston and would be very happy to drop by and pick up the box and get it to UPS. We will continue to recycle these items as a fundraiser. Jeanne suggested we recycle aluminum cans as a fundraiser and Barbara and Mary will recycle them. Jeanne also has a spare change bucket on the back table. If you are so inclined, put your spare change in when you attend chapter and we will use that money toward fundraising.

Barbara said she and Ronnie will not be selling at the Spring Fair but will be having a craft sale in Ronnie’s driveway. Chapter can sell ornaments there.

Jeanne mentioned that we are painting ornaments in April as a Chapter class, but suggested we get together in groups for a paint-in and also paint ornaments. Her house will be available either on Wednesdays or Saturdays if anyone is interested in getting together there. Or invite a painting friend for lunch and paint together.

Jeanne also asked how we wanted to breakdown the fundraiser monies. She suggested 25% for charity, 50% general fund and 25% to the seminar. When asked if that was acceptable, the majority of members raised their hands in favor of the breakdown. A question then came up about the charity. It is not a requirement for the chapter to give to charity, but it is a factor for the Chapter Achievement Award. We give back to the community when we support the food bank at Church and also when we donate Memory Boxes.

Treia Stitzer made a motion supporting Imy’s suggestion that we paint two ornaments a month then we would have a good start on the Ornaments for sale. The eggs for Easter should also be included with this motion. Joni Brooks made the second. Motion was passed.

Barbara passed around her completed project for class next month. She has the patterns and prep information. She printed a picture but apparently left them home. She will make sure we all get a picture.
Jeanne asked Imy if she had anything to report. Imy thanked the members for the very cute and touching Christmas card designed by Helen Fortner and signed by the members when she missed the Christmas Party. She also mentioned that if you want to learn the technique for a class, but don’t necessarily care for the project, you may buy matt board from Linda at Ye Olde Art Shoppe at 12 pieces for a dollar. Linda is also closing out all of her wood pieces as Sam will be concentrating on making frames. Imy will go Monday and buy matt board which will be available to members at a very small price if they don’t have a surface to paint on.

Jeanne reminded everyone to check the table, sign up for hospitality and look at the show and tell items.
The project chosen for Karen Hubbard class was the butterfly and flowers.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:12 a.m.

Reminder: It has always been the policy that Chapter members may bring concerns, questions or complaints to any Board Member. If we don’t have an answer, we will get you one. We as a Board can not fix it or answer it if we don’t know there is a question or a problem.

Respectfully submitted,
Imogene Rains, Secretary

Ways-n-Means
Well ladies, I hope we are ready to give a great effort this year. We have some great fund raising ideas. I hope everyone remembers to bring in their empty cartridges and old cell phones. You will be happy to know that our last year’s collection will be on their way before you read this. My son helped carry the box. I also have the start of our pop can collection started in my kitchen. I hope that all of you are saving your returnable cans and bottles. Thanks to Belinda at Treasures of the Heart for the idea of painting the wooden eggs. If you took an egg, don’t forget to bring it back next month. There are also the Christmas tree ornaments to remember.
I know that it seems like a lot at once. I hope we all remember what we are working towards. The goal is to be able to give the members a free seminar. This is an attainable goal. I really believe that we can do it. See you at chapter. Barb Steingrobe

Terra Cotta

French Mauve
Antique Mauve
Burgundy Wine
Arbor Green
Black Forest Green

Prep-Directions

Base upper and lower stripe in the color of your choice. I chose blue because that is the color that will best match my house and garden. You may prefer a different color to match your garden and likes. The letters for,” Love Makes A Garden Grow” are Light Buttermilk.

The middle section is based in Light Buttermilk first. After the first coat is dry apply a second coat of Light Buttermilk with a slip/slap of Williamsburg Blue on the top half (the sky) and Fawn on the bottom half (the path). Don’t worry if these get all mottled together in the middle because this will be background behind the fence.

Apply the pattern for the fence, the flower pot, the sign, and the pathway stones. Base the fence in Traditional Burnt Umber. (Note- Use thin washes, instead of trying to base in one coat. It takes about 3or4 coats but the results are much nicer.) Base flower pot in Traditional Burnt Sienna. Base the sign in Light Buttermilk. We will do the path in class.

TIPS:
Wow – talk about great minds thinks alike! Both Jeanne and Donna gave me these tips.
Adjusting Patterns
By Nancy Hungate, shades of the Mississippi River Decorative Artists
Are you like me? When it comes to adjusting a pattern to a specific size, I always seem to work too hard to get it “just right.” Here’s a formula to get the right size, the very first time! Get your calculator to figure the percentage to reduce or enlarge by dividing the desired pattern size by the current size. Example: If your pattern measures 4 “wide and it needs to be 5 ½ “wide, you need to enlarge it 1.38 times its original size. (5.5”divided by 4” = 1.38). This means you would increase by 138%. If your pattern is 4” wide and it needs to be 3” wide, you need to reduce it .75 times its original size (3”divided by 4” = .75). This means you would reduce your pattern by 75% reduction. Hope this helps you some.
Donna had been looking over Maureen McNaughton's web site and ran across this great tip to put into the next newsletter.
How to Resize a Pattern:
Simply divide the size of the piece that you want by the size of the pattern you have, and then multiply by 100%.
For example, to reduce a pattern that is 15" long to fit a piece that is 12" long, divide 12 by 15 then multiply by 100%which equals 80%. Scan the pattern at 80% and it should fit exactly.
Or to enlarge a pattern that is 12" to 15" you take 15" divide by 12" multiply by 100% which equals 125%. Scan the pattern at 125%.
Another great tip:
Metallic gold or any metallic paint is very transparent and can take many coats for opaque coverage. So what you do is basecoat first with a regular acrylic paint that is close to the same color. For instance base coat with Americana's Antique Gold regular acrylic paint then base coat with a metallic such as Americana's Glorious Gold or Splendid Gold. The metallic paint covers in one or two base coats.
