President's Message
Have we all made the adjustment to the new year or are we still writing 2009 on all our paperwork. I have had a very easy time making the change. It amazes me that we are already through our first month and moving on to February. I have spring bulbs poking their heads out. I can't wait to see their colors. Thank you Nina, for teaching a playful little kitty last month. I saw some adorable little critters. All were different and had personalities of their own. What fun. This month we will have our seminar with Australian artist, Karen Bouwer. Learning to paint using mother of pearl will be a new adventure. The chosen projects are beautiful. I hope that everyone will be able to come and share in learning something new. It will be a great seminar. I hope that you all enjoy the coming spring flowers. Take this challenge from your President. Paint a spring bouquet. Bring your painting to the March meeting. I might have a surprize for you. Your Heart of the Umpqua President- Barbara Steingrobe

CHAPTER MINUTES The regular Chapter Meeting of the Heart of the Umpqua Artists was brought to order by President, Barbara Steingrobe, at 10:00 a.m. at Tri-City Church of Christ Fellowship Hall. There were 15 members present, and one guest. Barbara wished everyone a Happy New Year 2010!
Present at the meeting were: Wanda Jo Borcherding, Nina Daniels, Delores Everhart, Helen Fortner, Ronnie Gobel, Jodie Hall, Phyllis Lynch, Jean McNeese, Jamie Mills-Price, Lyn Moan, Mary Myers-Svets, Stormy Speaker, Barbara Steingrobe, Carol Swanson, and Donna White. Carol Swanson brought a guest, Carol Charette.
The Minutes of the last meeting were approved, as posted on our website. Donna White, 1st Vice President, reported that she had contacted Lori Larkey and Karen Hubbard. Karen responded and is interested in teaching one of our classes. Niki will do a seminar for us this year and Jamie will teach in April. Donna is working on filling in the teachers for the other months. Stormy Speaker, Treasurer reported that we had 19 paid memberships and she is working on the roster now. Stormy reminded everyone to sign in and that there was a “Change Bucket” on the back table. Before the meeting, Jean sold raffle tickets for items on the back table and earned $67.00 for the chapter. $4,109.93 in the Umpqua Bank Money Market Account - 2,281.20 in the Umpqua Bank Checking Account · $6,391.13 Total of both accounts. Phyllis Lynch reported on the Karen Brouwer Seminar to be held Feb-13 & 14th in the Riddle Community Center 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Class Fee $55.00 and Supplies $35.00. Up to 80 Points can be used (in increments of 10 points) to offset the cost. There will be a potluck lunch each day. Members interested in going to the seminar but not able to attend both sessions can go together with another member and share the cost with one going on Saturday and the other on Sunday. We need 20 people to sign up. Discussion was held on the Chapter paying for seats not purchased so that costs for the teacher would be covered. Helen moved that the Chapter pay for seats not purchased at the Karen Brouwer Seminar. Donna seconded the motion. Motion passed.
STANDING RULES Barbara presented the changes to the Standing Rules as voted on by the board two years ago. Apparently the next board did not realize that changes were made so no chapter vote was done. Barbara presented these changes and discussion was held. The changes are as follows: (1) Membership dues are changed from $20.00 to $25.00 per year. (2) The Financial Report will be from Jan-01 to Dec-31 each year. (3) Any transferred funds from one account to another will be approved by the chapter president and this signed document will be attached to the bank statement which the transfer occurred; (4) Changes were made to the point system (#7 of the Standing Rules). Helen moved that all of the above changes be made to the Standing Rules. Carol seconded. Motion passed Jodie will type up the changes and send a copy to SDP and to the chapter officers.
FUNDRAISERS Coffee Stop Barbara suggested that we hold another Coffee Stop fundraiser to replenish any funds used for the seminar. Discussion was held and it was decided that we would put off the Coffee Stop fundraiser because we had enough funds in the treasury to cover any seminar fees. Bunko Night Everyone was excited about holding a Bunko Night as a fundraiser for the chapter. Discussion was held; Jodie will check with the church to see if it is possible to hold the Bunko night there. The Donut Shop, Pizza Palace and El Paraiso were also suggested sites if the church declined. Tickets would be $25 per person and be sold by members to family and friends. Ronnie volunteered to be the chairman and Jamie the co-chairman Painted Quilt Donna suggested that the chapter make up a quilt of painted squares. Quilts like this are appreciated and we should be able to make some money selling raffle tickets. We could use the no-teacher meetings to paint the squares. Jeanne Swanson will put the quilt together and the machine quilting will be done for cost. Members would sell the raffle tickets for the chapter. Donna will chair the project with Phyllis as co-chair. Jamie volunteered to take the quilt to the Las Vegas show in the Spring of next year in hopes of selling more raffle tickets. We would have a year to do the quilt and it would be raffled off at the Business Women’s Craft Show.
WEBSITE Jamie will continue to do our website. She was thanked by the members for doing a wonderful job! She asked for items for the website – just email them to her.
AWARDS FOR 2009 Barbara passed out the Awards for 2009. She had created beautiful certificates foreach member award and attached on the back were charms or gifts.
NEW OFFICERS FOR 2010 Barbara thanked the outgoing officers and introduced the new incoming officers for 2010. Barbara thanked Mary and Helen for the beautiful table decorations. It was moved and seconded that the meeting be adjourned. Motion passed. Minutes of the Chapter Meeting were taken and typed by Jodie Hall, Secretary Minutes approved on:___by vote of the membership.
JANUARY PROJECT “Priscilla” by Nina Daniels Barbara introduced Nina Daniels as our Artist/Instructor for the day. Nina is a member of our Chapter and the art teacher at Canyonville Christian Academy. She will be teaching a larger picture of this project at National later this year. Because of time constraints with our Christmas Party and potluck, Nina shortened the picture to just the kitty and a little of the fence. Jodie Hall Secretary, Heart of the Umpqua Artists

Here is a ways-n-means update. Last year we earned $1673.39. In Jan. the table drawing income was $67.00. We have several fundraising ideas. Ronnie and Jamie are organizing a bunco night. Donna and Phyllis are organizing a quilt drawing. We also will be doing a rest area coffee booth in the spring. And, of course, we will still have our monthly table drawing. If we do well, this will help reduce the cost of seminars for our members. Let’s all take an active role in making this happen. We can make 2010 even more productive than 2009. Barb. Steingrobe

Please remember, our chapter is very fortunate - we do not have to pay any fees to use the Tri-City Church of Christ facility. In 2009 let’s continue to show our appreciation and help support their church pantry. In the bag, please put a list of the items you bring and their est. cost, thank you!
Food Pantry donations at our January Chapter meeting included 37 items with a combined value of $52.00 "Thank You!" to everyone who donated.
