President’s Message: I’ll start with a big “THANKS” to Donna! It was an easy rose project, with a fun texture technique that gets you thinking of ways to take it to the next level. Now isn’t that what painting is all about, learning and stretching for that next level. Barb and I sold ornaments and goodies this weekend at Treasures. Barb will give you the financial results. What I wanted to comment on was the sisterhood of fellow painters. It was wonderful, to talk to old friends we haven’t seen because of gas prices. Our heart went out to the dear painter that lives in a forsaken area where there are no paint classes or stores or Chapter! I sure would like to visit the Chapter in Michigan, that lady was a sweetheart. Everyone we met was just like another member of our own Chapter and would fit right in. Ladies, it’s a wonderful experience to meet our sister painters and I hope you volunteer to get that chance. Helen brought in the cookie jar, she finished painting for us to give as a “Thank You” to Calvin for starting up and maintaining our website. Sorry if you didn’t see it. It really was another work of art by Fortner. She also brought in the sample for the August project. You won’t want to miss this one! In July we’ll be drawing. Of course, drawing is all about learning to see. I’m looking forward to this, as it always opens my eyes to my painting projects. Have a wonderful holiday month! Smiles, Jeanne

Ways-n-Means:
I’m happy to report that we had a pretty good weekend at Treasures of the Heart. Our bake sale/ornament sale/4th of July pin sale earned us $67.00. We will be selling the ornaments and bake sale items again next week and for Jamie’s July seminars. I was not surprised that the baked goods sold before the first day but not so well after the second. Friday the ladies were hungry after driving. Saturday, they were all exhausted from their day of painting and full from all the good food that Jamie fed them all day long. I painted some 4th of July pins, which did really well. Over all it was a good weekend. I hope we continue to do well. Don’t forget to bring me your ornaments. We can’t sell what we don’t have.
We had about $4 in soda cans turned in at chapter. We also had 3 inkjet cartridges turned in. That should be enough for me to turn in a small box. I hope to have more good reports by our next chapter meeting. I hope you all enjoy the weather but still stay cool.
See you next month. Barb Ways & Means, Heart of the Umpqua Artists

Chapter Minutes: Heart of the Umpqua Artists June 21, 2008 Held at Tri City Church of Christ
The meeting was called to order at 10:05 a.m. by our President Jeanne Swanson with nine (9) members in attendance.
Jeanne asked if someone would like to make a motion to accept the minutes from last month as printed in the Newsletter. Stormy Speaker made a motion to accept minutes as printed and Jean McNeese made a second. Motion was carried.
Jeanne said that a major decision needed to be thought about by Chapter members in the near future concerning the election of officers at the end of the year. Many of the officers will be completing their two year terms of office. Jeanne said she would not be interested in serving another year as President as she has too many things on her plate and mainly only ran for President last year after her father died because no one else stepped up She needs to have time to grieve and catch up on a few things. Mary Myers is not interested in running again since Frank died. Helen is finishing up her second year as Treasurer and due to Mikes’ health problems does not want to commit to any other position next year. Imy and Barbara will also be finishing their second terms. If anyone is interested in running for another position please be thinking about which one and also be thinking of someone else that might be interested in a position. Several members asked how many officers were necessary in order to retain our affiliation with SDP. Jeanne did not have that answer at hand but will make some phone calls and do the necessary research in order to find the requirements for minimum officers to maintain our Chapter affiliation. We DO NOT want to loose HOTUA. Jeanne will get this information back to us as soon as she finds out.
Jeanne asked Imogene Rains if she had anything to report. No report from Secretary. Stormy said Thank You to Jamie. The newsletter looks great and the website is awesome. Thank you to all members for supporting her when she was doing newsletter and website.
Jeanne asked Treasurer Helen Fortner if she had anything to report. Helen said we have $4,048.90 in our money market account and $836.21 in our general checking account for a combined total of $4,885.11.
Jeanne asked for a report from Jean McNeese, 2nd V.P. Jean said she had sent out a corrected membership roster to all members, but no one could open it. Helen said she has already sent another roster out to members. Jean said she did not ask for any changes at the Fair, as they told her we did not have enough entries to warrant any changes. There is not a Decorative Painting section this year, just an acrylics and oil category.. She asked for Entry Books and they gave her three. She said she would need more as we were an organization and would need more than three. She went back to the lady and got three more books later. Please enter as many items in our category as we can. We need to represent Decorative painting.
Jeanne asked Ways and Means Chair Barbara Steingrobe if she had anything to report. Barbara said she and Jeanne had set up a table with ornaments and baked goods at Treasures of the Heart Friday. Jamie is teaching the first in a series of seminars and many of the ladies come to Belinda to shop. They sold a lot of goodies, not ornaments, but did sell a few of the 4th of July pins Barbara had painted. They made $18.00. She and Jeanne will be back at Treasures after chapter to man the tables when the seminar ends today. Barbara will not be in town next weekend, so will need volunteers to man the table and make snack items for the bake sale. Please turn in any ornaments you have painted and please let Jeanne know if you can bake any items and help man the table with her this coming weekend.
Barb asked Imy if they were going to be at the Riddle Sawdust Festival the 4th of July. Imy said she was waiting for a call back from Debbie. If Imy and Stormy are at the Sawdust Festival, they will need donations for the bake sale and will need a volunteer to set up and man the table and take down. She will get back to us. Barb then said she has enough cartridges with the ones Stormy brought today to send , however, she will probably do that when she returns from California.
Jeanne then turned the meeting over to Chapter Liaison Donna White for her report. Donna is reporting for acting 1st V.P. Phyllis Lynch, since Phyllis is helping Jamie with her seminar today. Phyllis needs any members that are attending the free seminar to fill out the applications before they leave today. We only have four turned in so far and need to give members first choice before we open the seminar to non-members of other chapters and paint clubs. Donna has applications with her. Donna has volunteer tomato plants with her from her yard free to anyone that wants some. She will be throwing them out if no one takes them. Donna received two checks in the mail and with the tickets that were purchased today now has $30.00 for this month toward the Roni LaBree special drawing. This brings the total for the Roni LaBree Paintings to $425.00, so far.
Donna went to Ladybug website and found the cutest angel pattern that is free and may be painted on anything you would like to paint. Not just for memory boxes or treasure boxes. She held up the picture and said if you want a copy, you probably will want to print soon as it will probably be replaced by another pattern. She also went back to Delta website for another look, Delta Creative is the site that has a lot of information and now has tabs to make it easier to browse. She will send us an email concerning the websites.
Since there were no more reports, the meeting was adjourned at 10:40.
Respectfully submitted, Imogene Rains Secretary, Heart of the Umpqua Artists

TIP: Here’s a simple one. If you are using Saran wrap for a technique and happen to run out, use a plastic grocery bag instead. Just be sure it’s white and don’t use the side with the lettering. Jeanne Swanson
