There are times when I think, how lucky we are to be artists. As an artist we see the world with a different set of eyes. There are no black and whites, only shades from light to dark. The sky can be calm or it can look as if it would like to cause mischief at the neighbor’s BBQ. We can look at painting of a busy freeway and name it, (Purpose), then name the painting beside it of the butterfly floating wildly in the wind from bush to bush and flower to flower, (Freedom). Our imagination is our playground and we should dare to explore it in our art.
Well, I did enjoy exploring that freedom with Carole Oyler in June. It was a very small class. I wish that more of you could have been there. We had a great time with the oil paints. All of the little girls turned out great. We need to make sure we support the teachers who are willing to drive a distance to teach us. I do really appreciate Carole’s talents as a teacher. She did a wonderful job. Thank you, Carole. I hope you will all be there on July 11 to paint the little owl with Donna White. Donna has been my teacher from the beginning. I have a great deal of admiration for her as a teacher and a painter.
I hope that you all had a wonderful 4th of July Holiday. I pray you haven’t lost your hearing from the fireworks. I’m looking forward to chapter. I hope to see you there.

Well, I know how much we like to discuss our fundraising, so I’ll try to keep this brief. We have our craft sale in Ronnie’s Driveway on July 25. The sale will be for one day only. A small % of the sales was to be donated to the chapter as the fundraiser. We will discuss this on Saturday. I will also send an e-mail reminder for anyone who cannot attend the meeting. I hope there will be good participation. If you know someone who does crafts let them know to call either Ronnie or myself, we would be happy to take their money too. (Oh, did that come out right.). We are also applying to do a free coffee booth at a local rest area. If you would be willing to volunteer to man the booth, your help would be greatly appreciated. If you cannot, you can still help by donating any of the items we will need.
Sugar Creamer Coffee Tea Bags Hot Chocolate Apple Cider Packets Stir Sticks Cups Napkins
We will also be drawing for our large wooden chest Saturday. If you want to buy tickets still see me before the drawing.
Have a good week! Barb. HOTUA Members Ways & Means, Heart of the Umpqua Artists

“A Parliament of Owls” Teacher: A Sherry Nelson design, taught by Donna White Date: Saturday, July 11th, 2009
This project is featured in the Spring 2009 issue of the Decorative Painter. (Pg. 42) I have converted it from oils to acrylics. I will refer to different pictures of the painting process in the magazine but remember the project is painted in oils and therefore the instructions are different than what I will be teaching. You will use the line drawing from page 50 of the magazine for your pattern. Once you have painted this project, you will be able to use the same techniques and colors of acrylic paint to paint the other two canvases that are featured in the article.
Required Materials
|
PALETTE: DecoArt Americana Baby Blue Yellow Ochre Light Buttermilk Raw Sienna Khaki Tan Lamp Black Dove Grey Paynes Grey Driftwood Celery Green Mississippi Mud Soft Sage Raw Umber Plantation Pine Antique Gold
|
SUGGESTED BRUSHES & Supplies: 3/8, 1/2, ¾” angular #2 & 3 round 18/o liner #6 filbert Q-tips Small sponge roller
SURFACE: 8X10 Gallery wrap canvas (this is a canvas that has been stretched over the wooden frame and stapled on the back).
|
|
PREP: The background is to be painted wet into wet using a small roller.
The painting surfaces and edges of the canvases are first basecoated with one coat of Baby Blue using the sponge roller. Allow this to dry. Basecoat a second time with Baby Blue. While this is wet, drizzle (different area’s of the canvas) Light Buttermilk from the bottle onto the wet surface. Adjust the colors to your liking. I used a lot of Light Buttermilk as I wanted to tone down the brightness of the blue. Roll this color into the blue, moving the roller here and there and allowing some “splotchiness” to remain. The splotchiness will resemble far away clouds.
Trace pattern or line drawing from page 50 of the Decorative Painter and transfer, centering the drawing on the canvas.
NOTE: If your pattern doesn’t want to transfer clearly, you may have to use a new piece of transfer paper and a stylus with a larger end or ball to get the pattern to transfer.
INITIAL BASECOATS: (If you add a little bit of water to your basecoats it will cover the canvas a bit easier)
OWL: Put on your pallet a puddle of each color: Dove Grey and Driftwood. When loading the brush, (#6 or 8 round) apply both colors to the brush and base in the owl, following the direction of the growth of feathers. It’s ok that each time you load your brush it’s not the same exact color. It will look a bit blotchy. (Don’t forget the tail underneath the limb!) Base Leaves: Celery Green; Base Limb: Driftwood.
Apply pattern for details. Use Figure 1 Owl, page 45 of the Decorative Painter for visual aid in basecoating all the dark areas Lamp Black using a #2 or 3 round. Base Pupil: Lamp Black. Base Iris: Antique Gold. Base Beak and Toes: Khaki Tan. Base Talons: Raw Umber.

Please remember, our chapter is very fortunate - we do not have to pay any fees to use the Tri-City Church of Christ facility. In 2009 let’s continue to show our appreciation and help support their church pantry. In the bag, please put a list of the items you bring and their est. cost, thank you!
The totals for the food pantry for this month are: 22 items and a total of $28.47.

A letter from the SDP Board of Directors went out on April 16, (Keep Our Society Strong-KSS), sharing honest information about the Society’s current financial situation and asking our members to help out by pitching in any way that they can.
The response has been overwhelming and heartwarming! We would not expect anything less from our wonderful members. Out of the hundreds of emails we received, two were from Chapters who wished to challenge their sister Chapters to support SDP. Those challenges are reprinted below. We would be so grateful if you would take a moment to read the challenges, share them with your Chapter members, and consider accepting one of these challenges.
From Leah Luper, President of The Idaho Chapter of Heritage Artists The Idaho Chapter of Heritage Artists is donating $500 to the KSS effort and is challenging ALL the other Chapters of SDP to do the same! We had our monthly meeting today, discussed the email and voted 100% in favor of sending the donation. When we discussed all the things that National does for us, and how our lives have changed because of Decorative Painting, there was no other option than to support our National organization and issue this Challenge for other Chapters to do the same or more!!
We understand that Chapters come in many sizes and that a $500 donation is a lot of money! We are equally grateful for any gift you can give, and want to share the approach that another Chapter has taken. Here is the other challenge that we were asked to send you:
From Gloria Falk TDA, President of Gateway Decorative Artists of Greater St. Louis , Mo. Since the news came out that SDP could sure use some extra funds, we brought it up at our meeting last Sunday. The Chapter voted to send a donation to SDP. Someone spoke up and said, "What if every member here today would donate a $1? That would be easy on everyone and it would help SDP." We passed the hat and everyone chipped in. We'll do it again at our next meeting with a goal of raising a nice sum to send in from the chapter. We would like to challenge every chapter to do this! If everyone who attends chapter meetings donates just $1 it will make a difference. For without SDP, we wouldn't be where we are today. Will you send our CHALLENGE out to the other chapters?
Thank you, again, for your consideration. Together we will get through the tough times the way we always do: as a family! The Board of Directors and Staff of the Society of Decorative Painters
