May 17 Chapter Minutes: Heart of the Umpqua Artists Chapter Minutes May 17, 2008 Held at Tri City Church of Christ
The meeting was called to order by President Jeanne Swanson at 10:00 a.m. with ten (10) members in attendance. Jeanne mentioned that she would be reporting for Ways and Means chairperson Barbara Steingrobe who is ill. Jamie is working on her book and Mary Myers is out of town, so Phyllis Lynch will be reporting for her.
Stormy asked for a few minutes so Jeanne turned the floor over to her. The Pony Up fundraiser for Project Literacy was held Wednesday at Roseburg High School in Rose Hall. Heart of the Umpqua Artists’ are listed among contributors on the back of the program thanks to donations from Donna White, Phyllis Lynch and Imogene Rains. Project Literacy raised $1,700.00 for the adult Project Literacy Program which is the program that Stormy has been volunteering her time with the last couple of years. She read a Thank You card that she had received from Project Literacy addressed to Heart of the Umpqua Artists.
Treasurer Helen Fortner reported that HOTUA has $590.21 in the general account and has $4,042.25 in the Money Market account for a total of $4,632.46 in the treasury.
Ways and Means chairperson is ill, so Jeanne reported that HOTUA set up an Ornament display and sale at J & J Fabrics in Canyonville during their Quilt Shop Hop. There were lookers but no sales, but Judy said she will still be happy to sell ornaments for us year around, we just need to keep her supplied with ornaments.
Jeanne will collect any ink cartridges, phones and bottles that Barbara would ordinarily collect and that Donna will be collecting any items that members are donating for our e-bay chapter fundraiser and give them to Barbara on Wednesday.
Chapter Liaison Donna White reported that we need to accept minutes from last meeting. Jeanne said she would rather get reports done and then take care of that later. Donna said she received an email from Teresa Kuchler . She lives in Oregon City and teaches classes and seminars using Traditions, a cross over paint developed by David Jansen son of Jo Sonja. Traditions paint has been referred to as a cross over from Decorative painting to Fine Art. Teresa has a website www.camelotartstudios.com if anyone is interested in taking classes or a seminar.
Donna said she had been looking at Delta and Decoart websites. Delta has changed their website, but is still more primitive and seems to only have projects and products for sale. Decoart has also changed their website but has a project library that includes some very cute projects with free patterns. One she looked at was a very cute photo frame. Jeanne said that many more websites were offering free patterns, but feels that our Jamie was the person that started the free pattern trend. Rene Wallace and Maxine Thomas are several of the artists that offer free patterns. Donna said she had also checked Chezzas’ website and that she would be teaching at the Las Vegas Convention in 2009 if anyone was interested.
Donna said she had brought in patterns for the project she will be teaching in June in the event anyone had a problem downloading the pattern.. She also brought in a conditioner that a member of her class had brought in. She said when you clean your mop brushes, if you add a tiny bit of this conditioner and rinse in cold water, the brushes are very soft when they dry. She passed the tubes around for anyone that wanted to take one.
Donna reported that she had received an anonymous donation of $180.00 toward the Roni LaBree painting fundraiser. She has $395.00 so far in sales and donations for the fundraiser. She has tickets with her if anyone is interested in purchasing any for the drawing.
Acting 1st Vice President Phyllis Lynch reported that since there was only one more person in attendance today than last month, the free seminar project would be the two day watercolor which was the majority choice voted
for the Sue Eakin Seminar in September. Sue will take twenty-five persons, so Phyllis will have a form in the Newsletter for us to fill out and send in. If we don’t have enough members to attend, she will open it to other chapters, like Raindrop, Coast to Cascades and Siskiyou as well as open to local painters that meet at Ye Olde Art Shoppe and the Riddle Community Center. The cost for non-members will be $65.00 for two days which will go back into the free seminar fund. For those not interested in watercolor, we always learn something new and different at seminars. We only grow learning new techniques. Our food will be Pot Luck both days.
Phyllis also reported that Jeanne sent out ten (10) Memory boxes this month. Boxes went to Ontario, OR., Colorado and Oklahoma. Postage was very high, since we don’t ordinarily send many out of state.
2nd Vice President Jean McNeese reported that Fair Catalogs should be out around June 1st so we will have them for next chapter meeting. Jeanne mentioned there would be upcoming changes for member email addresses. Helen will be making the changes in the membership roster.
Sunshine Lady Treia Stitzer reported there was only one birthday for May. Jean McNeese had a birthday last Wednesday.
Jeanne asked for a motion to accept minutes from the last chapter meeting as printed in the newsletter. Donna White made the motion to accept minutes, Jean McNeese made the second. Motion was carried. Wanda Jo asked if she could have a moment. She said that when she goes to seminars, she didn’t always paint but did always come away from the seminar with knowledge. She said she always learns something, because when you listen you always learn. Tradition has a unique way of mixing colors and you learn a lot at their seminars.
Wanda brought fundraisers from Siskiyou, planners, wallets and checkbook covers. They are for sale if anyone is interested in purchasing any of them. This also might be an idea for us to use in the future. She also brought in two of her portraits painted on nylon canvas for Show and Tell. The classes were $70 a day, but you paint until you get it the way it is supposed to look. Joy Wilson taught this seminar at the Emporium in Oregon City and will be back in September.
Jeanne mentioned in the future, after August she would be going to Portland area for some seminars, so if anyone is interested in carpooling and room sharing to let her know so they could plan a trip.
Jeanne also said if you want to paint Donnas’ project on a Memory Box, the box is free. If you want to paint one to keep, the boxes would be $3.00 each.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:35 a.m.
Respectfully submitted Imogene Rains
