President’s Message for March: Hi Friends, It’s almost Spring! It’s almost Spring ! It’s almost Spring! That litany keeps running through my mind these days. Barb’s great project got me in the mood for gardening. Thanks Barb. I’ll be keeping my eye out for those pretty little love bugs. In March my first hummingbirds come back. I think I’ll paint a few of Donna’s hummingbird’s to dream on until the real thing appears. Karen Hubbard will be with us this month. If you missed painting with her at the seminar you are in for a treat. The rest of us know how informative, not to mention gracious and fun, she is. Really looking forward to her project. It’s Board Soup month. Bring your appetite. As always, looking forward to seeing you. It’s almost Spring! Grins, Jeanne ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Memory Boxes Everyone has made the Memory Box Program quite successful for our chapter. We have only a few changes this year. We will be mailing five boxes a month, instead of four. Phyllis will be keeping the records and checking boxes in and out. Jeanne will be storing the boxes and mailing them. We sent 5 boxes to Holy Rosary Medical Center in Ontario, OR. We collected 13 Boxes. Another really good job ladies thanks everyone.

February 16 Chapter Minutes: The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. by our president Jeanne Swanson. There were 13 members present at this chapter meeting.
Jeanne asked for a motion to accept the January minutes as printed in the February newsletter. Joni Brooks made a motion to accept, Jean McNeese made the second. Motion was carried. Secretary Imogene Rains is unable to attend today; Stormy Speaker will be taking minutes. Jeanne introduces our new member Dee Everhart and Dee is welcomed by those in attendance. Jeanne asks the members to think of all our members dealing either with their own health issue or with family members’ health issues. Jeanne said if you want to know who to call or think of, just ask her.
Membership chair, Jean McNeese, said that she has your 2008 HOTUA membership cards available. Please show your SDP card to obtain you HOTUA card. Jeanne went on to explain for Jean that our roster is on the computer and Jean just has to verify a few peoples information and so within a week you will receive our current roster.
Treasurer, Helen Fortner passed out a hand-out detailing totals. Helen reiterated how jazzed she was about the possibility of a FREE seminar and about selling things during Jamie’s Summer Seminars. A big thank you to both Jamie and Belinda for supporting this endeavor. We need those ornaments so we have them to sell to the wonderful ladies attending Jamie’s seminars. Helen asked us to reaffirm that WE CAN DO IT. She outlined we have about $2,000 per year of hard core expenses. Helen is asking for members to submit their expense reports. If you plan to donate, please let Helen know that you are donating items. A thank went out to both Treia and Ronnie as they are donating the costs of their position. Bottom line is we have $4,656.30. Thank you Jamie for donating your points. Based on last year’s seminar figure ($2,500 seminar expense) Helen rounded the figure and estimates we need $1,500 to meet expenses – if the figure is less – yea! and if the figure is more, then guess what – the figure goes up. Jeanne stresses if you have ANY questions, please don’t hesitate to talk to Helen or one of the Board members for clarification.
Ways and Means Chair, Barbara Steingrobe thanked every for bringing in their eggs. Barb asked if we brought our bucket for change and Jeanne answered in the affirmative stating it was on the back table. Jeanne announced that the (soda) can monies will be placed in the change bucket as well. Barb thanked Joni for bringing in cans and let everyone know to just let her know if you brought any cans/bottles in today. Jeanne interjected that even though she did not have many cans she got $6.00 for turning them in – so it mounts up fast. Jeanne also pointed out that the youth group of the church is collecting cans – check out their sign to see how much they have raised in such a short time. Barb sent in all the cartridge/cell recycling and is still waiting to find out how much we have raised. Barb let us know if any member wants to order brushes from Athena, she will be placing an order after March chapter. Barb reminded everyone that the Chapter receives 20% of the order. Jeanne reminded everyone that you can go on-line to check out the brushes. Barb had the catalogue available for anyone to look at. Barb asked that everyone continue to bring in ornaments. Jeanne let Barb know that the Roni LaBree was go with Belinda. Barb asked Jeanne to explain. That was all Barb had and turned the floor over to Jeanne. A discussion was held regarding the donated Roni LaBree painting. A motion was made and seconded to table the discussion until further information was forthcoming. Jeanne mentioned the mat board that Imy purchased from Ye Olde Art Shoppe for members to use as a surface. A discussion was held regarding the exact circumstances and tabled to obtain more information. Jeanne spoke about the ornament blanks and explained that she went to Over the Hill Ceramics and purchased ceramic ornaments. We have porcelain flat disks; Jeanne explained that when painting on ceramic, it is very important to be sure your paint is completely dry between coats otherwise you will lift paint. Wanda Jo also gave an important tip – base coat with an old brush – bisque is very rough and will kill your brush. Stormy also suggested taking a damped sponge to wipe the piece down – that will get rid of any dust and your paint will go on smoother. There are 3 different colors of glass ornaments, Carl cut us stars, circles and two new shapes. Jeanne mentioned she has ceramic eggs for sale if you wish to paint one for a gift or family member. Jeanne also has paint cans for sale should anyone wish to paint them for our future fundraiser sales. A member asked for clarification on what the mat board was for. Jeanne explained that you can use the mat board as an inexpensive alternative to purchasing a piece for a project.
Newsletter Editor, Stormy said newsletters went out, web is up. Found the Going Postal location in Green to get the newsletters out. Phyllis mentioned the one in Myrtle Creek is also terrific. Stormy met with Jaime and are finalizing her taking over the web administration. Exciting changes ahead and the hope is to have the Jamie hosted web up the 1st weekend of March. Please be sure to get me anything you have for the newsletter as early as possible to allow me to do what I do and forward to Jamie so she can do her thing. Working on networking with other chapters in the west by sending and receiving newsletters. A question was asked as to the newsletter deadline and it is always the Friday after chapter. A request was made to list the chapter web site (if any) and there is interest in seeing the other chapter’s newsletters. Jeanne thanked all of the members for their contributions to February’s newsletter.
Hospitality, Ronnie had nothing, but Jeanne reminded everyone that March is Board Soup month. The Board will be furnishing soup and the members are asked to bring items to accompany the soups.
Sunshine Lady Treia said she send cards to Carolyn Swanson and Floy Williams. Treia shared with us her wonderful news about her mother’s eyesight improvement. Treia shared a joke with all of us.
Chapter Liaison: Jeanne introduced the new position that SDP has suggested. Donna has graciously agreed to accept the position. Lisa Ludwig, Raindrop Chapter, contacted Donna with some seminar information. Donna will be communicating with the other chapters sharing information on seminars so we may have the opportunity to participate if we choose. All of the information will be under the News from the Northwest heading in our newsletter. Donna explained why the Raindrop chapter can offer a big brush seminar for only $25/$35 is because they alternate every other year with Washington and have their regional seminar and take the money earned from the convention and help defray some of the costs. Donna let us know that currently Jamie is offering 30% off of her Lowell Cornell brushes while quantities last. Jamie has come out with 4 new packets plus 4 new pin packets. Donna let us know about an email offer on OTT lights from JOAnn.com that was good through 2/17/08.
Jeanne mentioned her heads up email about the pattern packets that Joni had for sale. Jeanne also offered more information about the Riddle Art Guild.
Jeanne clarified that we do want to support a charity again this year which was voted on at the January 08 chapter meeting and asked that we write our preferred charity on a list placed on the table.
1st Vice President Mary Myers let us know that all of the teachers, whose work is on the table, have agreed to be our 2008 Seminar teacher. Mary asked if we wanted to also vote for a 2009 teacher and the majority answered in the affirmative. She will pass around the ballots to be marked. Mary asked that if you had no interest in going to the seminar, please write that down. Jeanne listed our choices and explained the difference in costs. Joni presented Sue Eakin’s color theory/stroke work seminar submission. Jeanne provided more details for our upcoming projects.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:10 a.m. Reminder: It has always been the policy that Chapter members may bring concerns, questions or complaints to any Board Member. If we don’t have an answer, we will get you one. We as a Board can not fix it or answer it if we don’t know there is a question or a problem.
Respectfully submitted for Imogene Rains, Secretary By Stormy Speaker

Ways-n-Means Barb Steingrobe Job well done. I saw some wonderful painted eggs. We have already sold 5 at $5.95 each, for a total of $29.75. We are also seeing the rewards of our inkjet and cell phone recycling. We do not have a final figure because the shipment is still being inspected but, we have earned at least $25 for sending in our first shipment and shipping the phones and cartridges together in the same box. Thanks also to those who brought in ornaments. We will be selling ornaments at J&J Fabric between April 25 and May 3rd. That isn’t far away, so paint, paint, paint. We’ve made approximately $20 in can money and change. All in all, we are doing a good job. Keep it up ladies. Barb

Guacamole When you see avocados on sale buy them to freeze. Put in a bag with a little lemon juice. When you defrost them, they are wonderful for guacamole. Beat 2 avocados, ½ medium onion, minced, 1 tbsp. white vinegar, salt and pepper to taste and chopped green chili pepper to taste until smooth on medium mixer speed. Add a few drops of your favorite hot sauce if desired. Chop 1 ripe tomato; fold into mixture. Shred 2 to 4 cups of iceberg lettuce; fold into mixture. Serve as a dip.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TIPS Tip courtesy of Jeanne: This is a tip that pays off. Keep loose change at your painting table to use for covering areas such as faces when you spatter a project with paint. Once the paint is dry, just remove the coins. Tip courtesy of Donna: I ran across this tip while looking through some instructions and notes of Peggy Harris: Mix some gloss varnish into paint that can't be varnished later (such as frosted Christmas balls) to give it a satin sheen when dry. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Notice: Simple Leaf Kits: I have 2 more gold leaf kits left. They are only $5.00. If anyone wants one please contact me. Thanks, Phyllis ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ News from the Northwest: We hope to continue sharing this type of information with sister chapters in the Northwest area in future newsletters. Raindrop Chapter Lisa M. Shirley Wilson is coming to Portland in October. Look for more information in the future.
