Volume 7, Issue 5 ~ May 2010

_President

I don’t know about anyone else, but after painting Jamie’s project, I had to go plant some flowers. I was completely overtaken with spring fever. I truly love it. I hope everyone else is happy with their picture also.

Welcome back to our May teacher, Sue Eakin. I really enjoyed our last class with Sue and am looking forward to her class. Even though I don’t normally paint with watercolors, I have found that some techniques can be used with acrylics as well. Learning to mix colors is extremely important for any artist. It makes life a lot easier when you don’t have the color asked for in your pattern. There is always something to learn from every teacher. I hope to see you all there.

Well, I just got a new camera. I went straight to my back yard expecting to see some form of wildlife to photograph. There are usually dear in the field, or wild turkeys, or at least a few birds. Well I think they saw me coming because there wasn’t a single sign of life. I had to go to the duck pond next to Fred Meyer to find geese, ducks and pigeons, (and their babies). So, your challenge for May is to bring in a painting, drawing or photo of a bird. Don’t let this month “fly” by without taking the challenge, and enjoy your art.

Summer Fun!

I will have a sign-up sheet at the May meeting for those who would like to spend the day in Bandon with me in June. I will organize some instruction for us while we are there. We can also have a nice lunch and visit the shops and galleries. And of course visit the beach. I hope that you will join me for some fun at “Bandon by the Sea”.  Your President: Barbara Steingrobe

_Chapter_Minutes

Call to Order: The April 17, 2010 Chapter Meeting of the Heart of the Umpqua Artists was called to order by President, Barbara at 10:00 a.m. at Tri-City Church of Christ Fellowship Hall. 16 members were present.

Approval of Minutes: The minutes of the March 20th meeting were corrected as follows: Kelly Pomeroy will be teaching in October. Jean moved that the minutes be accepted as corrected, Joni seconded the motion. Motion Passed.

Treasurer’s Report: Stormy reported that the money market account earned $2.60 in interest. Balances in the accounts are as follows:

    • $2,049.58 in the General Account
    • $4,117.03 in the Money Market Account
    • $6,166.60 Total of both accounts.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Donna reported that Sue Eakins will be teaching at the May chapter meeting. Watercolor supplies will be $4 and each member will be responsible for purchasing their own watercolor paper from the art shop downtown. The paper needed is 300# Cold Press / Quarter Sheet.

Stormy asked Joni to introduce her friend, and newest chapter member, Dava Pogue.  Lyn Moan has rejoined the chapter. She recently moved to Washington and travels here for the meetings. Stormy will update the membership list with the new names and addresses.

OLD BUSINESS

Ways & Means:

  • Barbara reported that she is working on getting the Metz Hill rest stop for our travelers Free Coffee booth. The booth is planned for the Memorial Day Weekend and she is waiting on confirmation on the date then she will email everyone for volunteers to help work the booth.
  • Bunko Night: The church has tentatively approved holding the Bunko Night in the fellowship hall. They will need more information as to date and time and number of people estimated to be there. Other places to hold the Bunko Night could be the VFW Hall and the Pizza Palace meeting room.

NEW BUSINESS

Fun Trip to Bandon By-The-Sea: Barbara said that there has been some interest expressed about planning an outing to Bandon By-The-Sea. This would not be a regular chapter meeting, just a fun trip for those interested in going. She has contacted the gallery there and they would do a class for us on “Perspective” at no cost. We could tour the gallery and the shops, eat lunch at one of the restaurants, and walk along the waterfront. More information on this next month – let her know if you are interested.

Barbara pointed out that there was a “flower bucket” on the back table for the members to put their comments in regarding the meeting, class, ideas, etc. She also reminded us of the “spare change” bucket.

Also on the back table were show and tell items painted by some of the members as well as a new Memory Box.

It was suggested that we might have one of the new photo picture frames on the back table with all the photos taken at the meetings and seminars.  Jodie has a picture frame and will bring it – with the chapter photos – to the next meeting. Jodie is also working with Stormy and Jamie to get the pictures online for everyone to see.

Jean reported that the chapter raffle earned $80 today.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:15 a.m.

PREP WORK:

Using a light box or tape your pattern under your paper and tape to a window and trace lightly the line drawing onto your paper with a pencil or make your own graphite paper by scribbling with a pencil onto a piece of tracing paper and using this paper as your graphite paper. Don't use the traditional graphite paper that we use with our acrylics. Tape down the watercolor paper to a board or hard surface using blue painter's tape.

_ways-n-means

Hello ladies. This is just a note of encouragement. I am waiting for a response from the Dep. Of Transportation, verifying our rest area free coffee booth. I will send out an e-mail and start making calls for volunteers as soon as I get the O.K. Please don’t be afraid to volunteer at the rest area. We truly had a great time last summer and met a lot of grateful drivers. I hope that if you cannot spend time in the booth that you would help in some other way. We will need supplies, and a list of needed items will be sent out. We may even have the O.K. before the news letter is up.

I am hopeful that, with this fundraiser and the Bunco Night (which is being worked out) we will have a successful year for Ways-n-Means. I also would like to thank those members who are willing to volunteer. You are greatly appreciated.

Your President: Barbara Steingrobe

Please remember, our chapter is very fortunate - we do not have to pay any fees to use the Tri-City Church of Christ facility. In 2009 let’s continue to show our appreciation and help support their church pantry. In the bag, please put a list of the items you bring and their est. cost, thank you!
