President’s Message
April Message:
Sunflowers in the kitchen, butterflies in the meeting room, roosters at the raffle table, little birds at the Show and Tell; it really was a fun meeting, don’t you think? It was a treat to see Karen Hubbard again and she made the painting seem so easy.  Of course, thanks to everyone for the wonderful banquet we had!
April will be a time to gather and actually get to chat with our painting friends. We really need to work on getting the ornament project underway. I know it seems early but we have venues in April, June and July to sell ornaments. Also, if you want to bring a UFO or a project you’d like to donate for sale, that’s fine. I’ll also have the vinyl floor mats there for the May project. Phyllis will give us a demonstration in the morning. The Artful Stencil has reconsidered and will be there in the afternoon. It’s a play day. Come and have fun with friends.

May Message:
Oh my goodness! Who would have thought, that heat guns and stencils would have made a group of women lose control! We had a fantastic time in April. Thank you to Phyllis, Kathy and Joni. Visiting with our painting sisters was the best. If you weren’t able to join us in April, we’ll be looking forward to seeing you in May.
Hopefully in May we won’t see the snow showers we saw this Saturday. However, sun, rain or snow, the floor mats we’ll be painting will help protect your floors. Please bring a few extra containers for mixing paint and taking home some acrylic floor polish. I promise this is an easy fun project which if you feel so inclined you can take to the next level. See you in May.

Smiles, Jeanne

Of Note:
Welcome back Judy Clark! - Elizabeth Hamann is looking well and says hi to everyone. - If you have not stopped to see Linda’s new digs for the Ye Olde Art Shoppe, be sure to go in and check out her new digs. Her new address is 106 NE Oak St in Myrtle Creek. - And OMG (as the kids would text) If you have not checked out Jamie’s sneak peak of #9 – be sure to go to her web site. Her new book looks “toadally” awesome. Last, but not least, our hearts and prayers are with all who are facing challenges in their lives.

April 19 Chapter Minutes:

The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. by our Chapter President Jeanne Swanson with thirteen members in attendance.

Jeanne asked for a motion to accept the minutes as printed in the newsletter. Motion made by Donna White to accept minutes as printed, second made by Jean McNeese, motion carried.

Jeanne mentioned that our newsletter editor, Stormy Speaker, has resigned due to personal reasons so May will be her last edition, at which time Jamie Mills-Price will take over that position. The deadline will remain the same so get the information to Stormy by Friday April 25th to be included in the May newsletter. Stormy will still be responsible for the picture trail so expect to see pictures from chapter and seminars on the web.

Treia Stitzer our Sunshine Lady reported that birthday cards are in the mail for all that have birthdays this month. She also said she had mailed a sympathy card and birthday card to Mary Myers.

Ways and Means chairperson Barbara Steingrobe opened her report with a suggestion from her husband for a fundraising activity. She would really like to jump right on this, since this is the first time he has indicated any interest in her painting activities. Jim volunteered to take pictures and sell
unwanted painted items of good quality on E Bay for the members of chapter that would donate the monies to Chapter as a fundraiser. If you have some items in the back closet or where ever that you would like to donate, please bring them to Barbara. We can have our own on line craft sale. She will send out an email about this to members.

J & J Fabrics in Canyonville is having a Quilt Shop Hop April 25 through May 3rd. She has volunteered to sell ornaments during this event for us. We need to price the ornaments in even dollar increments, no cents. She has also extended this offer to sell ornaments year around as long as we keep getting her ornaments. She presently is selling dish cloths year around for us. We need to send Judy Cuthbertson a thank you card from the Chapter for doing this for us. Belinda Legg from Treasurers has also volunteered to sell ornaments at her booth during the Christmas Fair for our Chapter. She has also offered us set up room to sell ornaments and bake sale items at the shop during Jamie’s seminars this summer. We will have to man the tables during this time, so we will need a sign up sheet and volunteers to help during this time. Barbara has information concerning what we can sell as bake sale items.

Fundraiser monies at present include $30.00 for egg sales from J&J Fabrics, $107.10 for 18 eggs sold at Treasurers of the Heart, $3.87 for can refunds and we earned $16.55 for the Athena brush sales. We are still recycling cell phones and ink cartridges, so continue to bring them in.

Ronnie and Barbara are not selling this year at the Summer Art Festival. They are having a Craft sale in Ronnie’s driveway, so if anyone wants to sell any items, you have to price, pack, deliver and unpack your items. You do not have to man a table. Ronnie and Barbara will sell for you, so if you’re interested, let them know. Date will be in July, but Ronnie will have to consult with Peter to finalize a sale date Imy and Stormy said they would take the tree and ornaments to the Riddle Sawdust Festival on the 4th of July, so we hope to sell some there. We are still actively trying to raise money for our free seminar with Sue Eakin, so every sale counts. At present it looks like we will have enough for the free seminar. Phyllis will have more information about that.
1st V.P. Mary Myers has a lot to deal with since Frank passed away, so Phyllis Lynch has graciously taken her place with the seminar planning and budgeting. Phyllis did say we have enough for the seminar, but we will have to pay $15.00 each for lunch unless we pot luck both days. She would like a vote today with the members present to see what they think. The projects are on the back table, please look at them, if you are attending the seminar please pick a two day project or two one day projects. The majority will rule, but she will be bringing the projects back next month for the members that are not here today. We need to decide if we want sandwiches and salad the first day and potato bar the second or pot luck both days. Show of hands indicates we want pot luck both days. Phyllis will work out a menu and sign up sheet for the seminar attendees. She will also price out the surface cost depending on the project chosen. If we are unable to fill all seminar spots, we will need to open to other painters or Chapters. She will also have to figure their cost for the seminar. The seminar will be held September 27th and 28th at the Riddle Community Center.

Treasurer Helen Fortner said there is $4,481.09 in total, $4,042.25 in Money Market account and $438.84 in our checking account.

2nd V.P. Jean McNeese announced that a new member roster has been emailed to all members. There were some corrections, so expect another roster to be emailed soon.

She asked all members to consider entering a painted item in the Fair this year. The Douglas County Fair will start the first of August; she will have the date soon. She is working to have all the Decorative Painting pieces in one spot so we can see who we are being judged against. She would like all first places on one shelf, second on the next and so on.  Not sure she will get it, but she will try. No decision has been made about manning a table or having a demonstration as yet.

Chapter Liaison Donna White has information and a catalog of classes available from the Northwest Tole Liners Convention to be held September 18th through September 21st if any members are interested in attending. Ladybug Jan McCraw has a free pattern on her website, Ladybugcreations.com for a program she started called Treasure Boxes. These boxes hold the toys for the children at all Shriner Hospitals while they are there for treatment for illnesses. The boxes fit in the bedside table drawers.  Jamie also has a link on her website, as well as two patterns for the treasure boxes. SDP has a CD for sale at $10.00 that has patterns for Treasurer Boxes and Memory Boxes.

Raindrop Chapter is having a seminar May 3rd and 4th, but it is probably too late to get a seat. There has been information the last two months for this seminar. Joanne Clark and Kathy Chambers have a seminar July 19th and 20th. Ronnie Bringle is having a three day seminar May 16th through the 18th. See Donna for information on these seminars if you are interested.

Donna said we have $160 in ticket sales so far for the Roni LaBree drawing. She had Stormy attach pictures of the Roni LaBree paintings to her email to Sheila at SDP explaining what we are doing and why to see if she would include the information to chapter happenings. Donna has not received an answer as yet. Donna has tickets with her if anyone is interested in purchasing any today.

Stormy asked to speak. She wants to thank everyone for their support in the past. She thanked Jamie for taking the Website to the next level and also for stepping up as newsletter editor. Stormy will be doing the May Newsletter so please get the information to her as soon as possible. Stormy will still be responsible for the picture trail. Nuff said.  On a personal note, she thanked Donna and Phyllis for donating door prizes for her volunteer project, Adult Project Literacy. They are having a fund raiser May 14th at 7:00 p.m. at Rose Auditorium at Roseburg High School. The event is called Pony Up. Music will be provided by the Slow Ponies a musical group started by the Applegate family. Still need donations for door prizes if anyone would be interested in donating anything.

Jeanne said she has not sent any memory boxes out this month as Marie has not been available to tell her where they need to be sent.

Jeanne also brought the floor cloth project mats so please pick up one before you leave as they do need prep work before next chapter meeting. There are also memory boxes on the table if any one wants any more to paint.

Jeanne explained the project to be taught by Helen Fortner. Smooshing. The bottles have already been prepped and the process is very easy and fun. Do not stress, it also is freehand but easy. An example of the bottle was sent around.

Jeanne introduced Phyllis to demonstrate the ornament stamping and embossing project for today.

Meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted
Imogene Rains, Secretary

Ways-n-Means

Well ladies, things are moving right along, as spring is slowly working its way toward summer. We turned in $137.10 to the treasurer in egg sales this last month. That was pretty good since Easter did kind of sneak up on us. We also brought in $3.87 in can returns and made a profit of $16.55 from the Athena brush order. We are still collecting ink jet and laser jet cartridges, and cell phones. We don’t have enough to send in yet.

We have a few new projects on the horizon for your consideration. The first is already in motion. That would be the ornament sales. The sales started at J&J Fabric on April 25th. There big sale will run through May 3rd. They have offered, however, to sell the ornament all year round. There will also be other opportunities to sell ornaments. We will be set up at Treasures of the Heart on the weekends of Jamie’s Summer Seminars, Imy will have her booth at the Sawdust Jubilee and Belinda will be selling our ornaments from her booth at the Christmas fair. We will also have the opportunity to sell bake sale items at some of these venues.

This July we will be having a summer craft sale in Ronnie’s driveway. She has a large enough drive for us to set up several tables. We will be able to sell our goods and some bake sale items. The details are still being worked out.

The last thing to report on is an e-bay sale. My husband, Jim, has volunteered to take our fairly good quality junk, and sell it on e-bay for us. He has done this a lot. Look around your house, yard, attic or garage. Bring in one or two items of reasonable quality to be donated to the chapter. Jim will do all the work, from pictures to computer, to shipping and we reap the reward. How awesome is that. Bring your items next chapter meeting or call me if you aren’t going to be there and I will pick them up. This could be a great fund raising opportunity.

See you next month Barb Steingrobe

May Painting Tip
From Patricia Rawlinson’s newsletter. When you are tracing a pattern, if you aren’t careful it can move and reposition as you trace, really making a mess. If you use one piece of tape at the top it can shift, but if you tape it too much it makes moving the transfer paper a chore.
SO…Tear or cut a hole in a center-ish area of our pattern and place a piece of masking tape there. It keeps it steady and centered.

April Chapter Stamps and Embossing Powders with Phyllis Lynch and
Stenciling with The Artful Stencil Ladies:
WOW Phyl – informative and fun as always. Thank you for sharing your materials and knowledge with us. I hope many of us will be able to put it to excellent use.
Joni and Kathy – you both get a gold star for the inspiration and the techniques. I can see some memory boxes stenciled in the near future.
A huge thank you to all 3 ladies for a wonderful chapter. If you missed April, you missed out on a lot of fun and information. Be sure check out www.theartfulstencil.com
