President’s Message:
Hi everyone,
October was a project that I had been looking forward to for a long time. I think all of us were not disappointed! Thanks to Karen Damerow for a wonderful project. Mine will be hanging for Christmas.
Remember our November meeting will begin at 9:00 A.M. We need the extra time to get this project done. As always we look forward to seeing Jaime and having her teach. Will be curious to hear of her Australian adventures. Remember if you have a gift donation for the Christmas party Bingo game you can bring it and give it to Barb
Giant congratulations to our newly elected officers and volunteers. Thanks to everyone who helps keep the chapter going and fun to look forward to each month.

Smiles, Jeanne Swanson
President, Heart of the Umpqua Artists

Chapter Minutes:
Heart of the Umpqua Artists
October 18, 2008

The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. by our President Jeanne Swanson with twelve (12) members and two (2) guests in attendance.

Jeanne asked for a motion to accept minutes from our last meeting. She was reminded there were no minutes in September since we had no meeting before the Sue Eakin Seminar.

Jeanne made an announcement that our current membership list is only one page. We are using two lists at this time one for 2008 which is good through December 31 and our new list that starts in 2009. Everyone needs to make sure they get their memberships paid. We still get points for renewal before October 31st. SDP must receive your renewal postmarked before December 1st, or there will be an additional charge of five dollars ($5.00) for postage and handling fees.

Jeanne announced that the Board had made a decision that we needed to change our dues from twenty dollars ($20.00) to twenty five dollars ($25.00) since we are not making enough money with drawings and other fundraisers.. However, this is something that chapter members must decide. This raise in membership dues will only pay for one teacher a year, but it will help. Reminder was made that we need to have a motion to this effect. Phyllis Lynch made a motion to raise membership dues for 2010 from twenty dollars ($20.00) to twenty five dollars ($25.00). A second was made by Joni Brooks. A majority of the membership voted to raise the dues. Helen Fortner said she would change the standing rules to reflect the change.

Jeanne then called on 1st V.P. Mary Myers for her report. Mary said that Barbara Steingrobe had agreed to teach in January and will have a sample of her project at the next chapter meeting. She then turned the meeting over to Phyllis Lynch. Phyllis has the surface that Jamie will be painting next month with her. The cost is five dollars ($5.00) for the laser cut heart. You may buy from her or go to Valhalla and buy from Don. He has several other surfaces available but they are a little more pricy. The time for Jamies class will be nine o’clock (9:00 a.m.) so we can get the project finished. Remember November project is for HOTUA members only. No guests. December will be Christmas Party and Chezza, Cheryl Bradshaw from Australia will be here in February and has agreed to teach a one day project to our Chapter. Our meeting date will need to be changed to February 14th and will be held at the Riddle Community Center. We will need to pay for twenty members, but you can use twenty points which equals ten dollars ($10.00) toward the cost of the class. If you have questions, please call Phyllis. Phyllis also thanked all the members that turned in their extra point money so we could have the Sue Eakin free seminar. We came in under our budget for the seminar since Sue is considered a local and we also had pot luck and did our own clean up which cut down on expenses. She also extended a big thank you to all the members that stayed to help with clean up after the seminar. It went very quickly with all the helpers. Barbara asked if we would have a chapter meeting in November. Jeanne said if we needed, we would fit it in during lunch.
Jeanne mentioned that elections will be held today during lunch so we would have time to finish Karen’s project today.

Jeanne then called on Helen Fortner, Treasurer, for her report. Helen reported that we had $4,059.00 in our Money Market account and $440.65 in general checking for a total of $4,499.65. She also said she had received a lovely letter from SDP thanking our Chapter for the Roni LaBree scholarship donation of $127.50. She will place it on the back table if anyone is interested in reading it.

Jeanne then called on Ways and Means Chair, Barbara Steingrobe for her report. Barbara said she was going to have the cartridge recycles cut her a check, but they now only release funds in twenty dollar ($20.00) increments, so she will wait until they process this last box of ink cartridges and then we should have sixty dollars ($60.00). She said she needs three or four large ink jet cartridges to fill this next box to send to recycling. If you have any, please get them to her so she can send the box out. Barbara also said that next year she will not be recycling bottles and cans at the grocery stores. It takes too much time and is not worth the effort. However, if anyone else would like to do it she will happily turn the job over.

Barbara mentioned that we will be playing Bingo again at our Christmas Party. She then mentioned that we had in the past had pot luck and also had our Christmas Dinner catered. Her daughter Erica is in a catering class at school and would like for her class to cater our Christmas Dinner. They are going to video the class so it can be used as a resume for the Culinary School that they want to attend. Would the Chapter be interested in catering the Dinner this year. Joni asked what the cost would be.. Barbara had no idea. We need more information, menus and cost per person. It was suggested in view of the fund raising problems, that we could pay our own dinner. We could also have pot luck again.. Are the members interested? Barbara will get the information necessary. Ronnie asked why we were having money problems if we had so much in our treasury. Helen then went on to discuss the amount of money that was already allocated to other things, so we really didn’t have that much disposable income to spend on a catered dinner. There was a question if we needed points, this was tabled until the January board and chapter meetings. We really need to finish up so we can start painting. Barbara said that we have 72 ornaments on hand for the BWF the week end of Nov 1 and 2nd. We could use more ornaments, please get them to her. We have sold $477.60 in ornament and egg sales. We also did very well with the Roni LaBree drawing, so our fundraising is up 50% from last year.

Barbara mentioned she had been told that she had misappropriated the ornaments that Jamie had painted for the chapter. A big discussion was held. Board had decided that it was a non-issue, Donna asked how we were to know that ornaments had come in and when they went on sale. Ways and Means was the only one that knew what had been turned in and Donna was under the impression that they could not be sold until on display or at a sale event. Barbara bought and paid for all the ornaments that Jamie had turned in for the ornament sale. Jeanne indicated if we wanted to handle the “big brush” ornament sales differently than just regular members, a committee needed to be formed to decide what should be done in these cases. She thought it was a case of jealousy. In the future if you have an issue with a member, pick up the phone, do not send emails. Notify the president so it can be brought before the board for resolution.

Jeanne then called on Donna White for a report. Donna said she had been out on line and Ladybug had a really cute free pattern, which she displayed. She also indicated that she had the election ballots. We need to have nominations and election today during lunch for next year offices.

Jeanne went on to introduce Karen Damerow, but Stormy asked if she could introduce her guest Lyn Moan that was a new member. Donna then introduced her guest, Jodi Hall.

Minutes were provided by Stormy Speaker and the tape recorder since Imogene Rains, Secretary was not able to attend.

Thank you.

Secretary, Heart of the Umpqua Artists

Cook’s Corner

Recipe from Jeanne Swanson:
Key Lime filling (Multiple use)
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1-16oz. Cool Whip
Fold the condensed milk into the Cool Whip with a spatula. Be gentle.
¾ cup lime juice (I used Real Lime)
Fold in the limejuice. It will be very soft. Refrigerate until firmer.

USES:
Put 1 tsp. graham cracker crumbs into a cupcake paper that’s been placed in a muffin tin. Using an ice cream scoop put 1 scoop filling on top of the crumbs.
Sprinkle a few crumbs on top.
Use a graham cracker crust and put filling into the crust. Decorate with lime slices and whip cream from a can

Cooking tip from Joni Brooks:
I just learned this from the food network (I thought I knew everything)  if you want to peel garlic, boil a little water first, pour into a bowl and add garlic for about 15 seconds, when you take it out snip off the root end and the peel comes off in one try and very little mess.   Much nicer than messing with the dry paper fine peel.

Painting tip from Donna White:
To clean a stencil that has been sprayed with stencil adhesive spray; rub with WD40, then wash in warm soapy water, rinse and dry.
