President’s Message:
I know everyone wanted to attend the seminar but a few had other responsibilities. For that reason, I am so sorry to say it was a FANTABULOUS seminar! Several were shaking in their shoes, looking at the complexity of the project and the fact that watercolors are foreign to most of us. Sue soon banished all our fears and sparked interest for the art of color mixing. Several ladies were talking and agreed that she could teach us every meeting and it would always be something new. Thank you Sue for sharing your vast knowledge.

I also want to thank the membership attending the seminar. Every single lady attending approached this seminar as a learning experience. Not one person complained about anything. Questions were asked and help was asked for. And as a result we saw fantastic results with everyone’s project. I also want to thank everyone for being so generous and making the raffle so successful.

I want to remind everyone, October is election month. Karen Damerow also has a wonderful project for us. See you there.

Smiles, Jeanne Swanson

Ways-n-Means:
Well, ladies, we are moving into our holiday season. This is the time to bring in any ornaments that you have painted.  The Business Women’s Fair will be the first weekend of November and the Christmas Fair will be the first weekend in December. Ronnie and I will sell the ornaments from our booth since we don’t have enough ornaments to warrant paying for booth space. I would like to have an ornament painting day at my house again on Saturday, Oct. 11., from 1p.m. till 4p.m. I will have a couple of ornament designs planned ahead of time. This will make it more efficient and you will learn a new pattern. I will need to know how many people to plan for, Please call me (430-0119) or email me barbspainti@yahoo.com if you would like to come. I will send out an e-mail with more info next week. We also have the options of selling ornament at J&J Fabric and at Treasures of the Heart. This of course will depend on how many ornament we have.

Also this month I sent off a shipment off cartridges. We also earned about $2 in can returns. I hope to see you on the 11, otherwise, I will see you at chapter.

Have a great week!

(We will be emailing the pattern out; Phyllis will also have a few of the patterns available at the next meeting.)
Preparation
1. Sand surface, seal and lightly sand again.
2. Base the entire surface with Light French Blue and Light Buttermilk applied in a “slip-slap” manner: Double load a 3/4” angle or flat brush with Light French Blue and Light Buttermilk; blend on your palette and then apply to your surface in a “slip-slap” manner to create a mottled look. Use the side of your brush to soften any harsh edges.
3. Transfer the basic pattern, excluding the vine, the snow and the snowmen details.
4. Basecoat as follows:
Snowmen - basecoat all snowmen with Buttermilk. Do not basecoat the center snowman’s chin and hands where they overlap the letter “l.”
Snowmen Hats: Snowman sitting on the “W” - Celery Green
Center Snowman - Camel
Snowman next to the “e” - brush mix of Rookwood Red and Light Buttermilk
Holly Leaves - Celery Green
Holly Berries - Rookwood Red
* Do not basecoat the “Welcome” letters...we will paint those in class.

Cook’s Corner
This month’s recipe from Jeanne Swanson

Swedish Meat Balls
1 lb. ground beef
½ lb. ground pork (Jimmy Dean original sausage)
½ cup minced onion
¾ cup fine dry bread crumbs
1 TBL. dry minced parsley
1 ½ tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 egg
½ cup milk

Mix all ingredients thoroughly. It will be soft. Shape into balls the size of a walnut. Brown in ¼ cup margarine. Remove meatballs when browned but do not have to be cooked through. Make gravy (below). Return to gravy; cook 15 to 20 minutes on low or simmer.

Meat Ball Gravy (I like to double this amount)
Boil 2 cups water
Combine:
¼ cup flour
1 tsp. paprika
½ tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper

You should have at least ¼ cup fat in the pan, if not add ¼ cup margarine. Stir the flour combo into the hot fat to make a smooth paste. Cook on LOW for 1 minute. Raise heat just slightly. Slowly stir boiling water into the pan, whisking to keep smooth. Stir in ¾ cup sour cream.

Painting tip from Jeanne Swanson:
All brushes need to be cleaned before storage. After cleaning, a brush should be hung head-down or laid flat to dry. Easy ways to get the head to rest lower than the handle is to put the brush on an old ashtray with cutouts. Let the ferrule rest on the cut out and the moisture will flow out of the head without the head touching any surface
If a brush dries standing up, the cleaner and color residue can drain towards the ferrule, which can weaken the epoxy holding the hair in place.
This info comes from a very interesting sight about brushes, which explains how they are made and how to care for all types of brushes. www.silverbrush.com
