_President

I’m both happy and sad to be sending this message. I did not expect a news letter to go out this month because our news letter editor was supposed to be away on business. I am extremely saddened that she has had more unhappy days to cause her pain and grief. I always love having Jamie around but would not wish her to have any more sadness in her life. Thank you, Jamie, for taking time for us in your own time of need. You are greatly appreciated.

I am ready to move forward with chapter business. We will be holding elections soon. The board will be getting together and choosing a nominating committee. I hope you are all willing to take on the task if called upon. I also hope that you will all think seriously about taking an active role in the chapter this next year. We have some great opportunities.   We have struggled through personal illness, trials, and loss. We will come back strong. I am looking forward to seeing the members who are signed up for the October seminar with Donna White. It’s a beautiful project.

Until then, sit back and watch the trees change color, the howling of the wind, and maybe a black cat crossing the street at twilight. The moon has been beautiful and the silhouettes’ of the hills and trees under it, amazing. Don’t forget to take time to truly enjoy the changing of the seasons. (After all, we need the rain, and we are Oregonians aren’t we.)

Barbara started meeting by telling chapter she was holding a check in her hands for $582.95 for the fund raiser at the rest area, Barbara said they had a lot of fun and found the it was great giving back to the community, she said they felt safe and never worried, talk to a lot of nice people and people thanked them for being there, very rewarding, looking forward to doing it again with more chapter participation, she also said that with this monies we should be very close to last year’s dollar amount.
She thank everyone who helped and donated product, we spent less than $100 on expenses. Great Job to all that were there.
Phyllis let us know that 16 people signed up for Donna’s seminar in October, if there is not enough
people she asked if the chapter could pay, to make up the difference, Jeanne made a motion and Barbara said with a raise of hands, if this is okay. It was.
Teacher from Australia- Karen vote on having her for 1 or 2 days, due to the price Phyllis said it was
about $40.00 a day per person ( it could be less). We will open it up to other chapters so the price stays
down plus you can use your points. With a show of hands we will have her for 2 days. (She is coming

October 2009

I just wanted to let the members know how we did at the rest area coffee booth. WONDERFUL! I was not sure what to expect since this was our first time with this sort of fundraiser. I was hopeful because I had heard from others who had done the coffee booth that they did well. I was very pleased. We earned around $500 net. We also had a pretty good time. We served about 900 cups of coffee, tea, water, or hot cocoa. We met some pretty interesting people and some PRETTY INTERESTING people. It was all good. There were many people who were very grateful that we were there with coffee, just before they fell asleep at the wheel. It really makes you feel like you are providing an important service. We may have even kept someone from having an accident. I would gladly do this again. I hope you will join me. (Oh, I really loved the guy who asked me, “Why are you giving away free coffee?”. He had a very heavy Australian accent. Then he wanted to know. “What is an Umpqua?”) It really was a lot of fun.

SDP_Chapter_Challenge

KSS

A letter from the SDP Board of Directors went out on April 16, (Keep Our Society Strong-KSS), sharing honest information about the Society’s current financial situation and asking our members to help out by pitching in any way that they can.

The response has been overwhelming and heartwarming! We would not expect anything less from our wonderful members. Out of the hundreds of emails we received, two were from Chapters who wished to challenge their sister Chapters to support SDP. Those challenges are reprinted below. We would be so grateful if you would take a moment to read the challenges, share them with your Chapter members, and consider accepting one of these challenges.

From Leah Luper, President of The Idaho Chapter of Heritage Artists
The Idaho Chapter of Heritage Artists is donating $500 to the KSS effort and is challenging ALL the other Chapters of SDP to do the same!  We had our monthly meeting today, discussed the email and voted 100% in favor of sending the donation. When we discussed all the things that National does for us, and how our lives have changed because of Decorative Painting, there was no other option than to support our National organization and issue this Challenge for other Chapters to do the same or more!!

We understand that Chapters come in many sizes and that a $500 donation is a lot of money! We are equally grateful for any gift you can give, and want to share the approach that another Chapter has taken. Here is the other challenge that we were asked to send you:

From Gloria Falk TDA, President of Gateway Decorative Artists of Greater St. Louis , Mo.
Since the news came out that SDP could sure use some extra funds, we brought it up at our meeting last Sunday. The Chapter voted to send a donation to SDP. Someone spoke up and said, "What if every member here today would donate a $1? That would be easy on everyone and it would help SDP." We passed the hat and everyone chipped in. We'll do it again at our next meeting with a goal of raising a nice sum to send in from the chapter. We would like to challenge every chapter to do this! If everyone who attends chapter meetings donates just $1 it will make a difference. For without SDP, we wouldn't be where we are today. Will you send our CHALLENGE out to the other chapters?

Thank you, again, for your consideration.
Together we will get through the tough times the way we always do: as a family!
The Board of Directors and Staff of the Society of Decorative Painters
